Do they make a decent home?

Asked our realtor the same question and this was her exact response... She is a family friend who has been in the business for 30 years so I like to think I can trust her opinion. At least I hope so..
quote:
"I have sold a bunch of Ryland homes and my clients have been very happy. They are not the same as Highland, Shea, Trendmaker, Darling etc. but the price is reflective of that as well. They are pretty much equal with Ashton Woods, D.R, Horton, and lower price range of Perry and Newmark. If they were bad builders I don't think they would still be in business or in so many developments in Houston.

I would not have a problem with my kids buying a Ryland. I might if they were looking at Pulte or KB Homes."

Our first house was a Ryland home and we were in it for 9 years with little to no issues. I had some issues with them during construction but they were all ironed out after a few arguments and a certified letter to the right people.

Have lived in our Ryland home in Austin since October and haven't had any issues. Like 03 said, they were kind of inflexible during construction, but to product it quality as noted by some other folks who know quite a bit more than I do when it comes to new home construction.

First home was a Ryland. Had no issues with it. Similar story about their construction folks though. Had a couple very heated conversations, but the end result was good.

My parents have owned a Ryland home in Houston suburbs for 28 years with no issues.

As someone who works in the business and has buddies who work at builders all over the city, my general rule of thumb has been to stay away from LGI, KB, DR Horton, and Beazer.

In reality, most quality issues depend on the superintendent working on your home. You want a superintendent who loves working for the builder he's employed by. Those mentioned above typically aren't happy they are there. Again, it's hard to generalize because you might have some high quality supers and low quality supers at the same builder.

Ryland builds a good home. However, just like with any homebuilder most of how well the house is built is dependent on the actual superintendent in charge of the home.

Just a tip for building a home. Show up at the place often. Have your realtor swing in. Let the super know you'll be around and watching.
