Got hit pretty hard last night. Both cars outside have damage. I can see roof damage from the ground. Trees got stripped of most of their leaves.

I have never filed a homeowners claim before. I am looking for any tips, best practices or things to watch out for

Travelers Insurance treated me pretty well when East Dallas was hit a few years ago.

Best advice I can give on the roof repair (and this should be common sense) is to choose someone local who has been around for several years, and get references if at all possible. There were a bunch of fly-by-nighters who descended on the neighborhood within hours.

I went through this a couple of years ago. Agree on picking someone local and reputable.

Go back and double check your hail damage deductible too. My Homeowners policy with Allstate had a 1% deductible, except for hail damage, which I didnt realize was 2% ($6,500) until it was too late. Dropped them for Liere and a 1% hail deductible once repairs were made.

Also, some (a lot) of the roofing companies will claim to pay the deductible for you, which I believe is technically illegal because they are actually overcharging the insurance company. You can Google further but this is one link.

Whenever you file a claim say "hail and wind damage" from the storm on ______ date.

If it's not cut and dry and some damage is from hail but other damage is from wind then it could turn into 2 claims and 2 deductibles.

I had a my construction guy present for my claim and he pointed out many things they missed. On both roofs, the insurance agency tried to get away with replacing half the roof. Both sides were damaged, but one side took the bulk of the damage.

My contractor gave me the ammunition to keep arguing with them and I finally got both roofs 100% replaced.

He said he always has trouble with claims from the insurance that I use.

I would avoid the door knockers and find a local contractor who is respected.

For better or worse, I let my contractor handle the negotiations with the insurance company. He was able to also expand the initial claim to include almost all of the windows in my house. Could I have done that? Maybe, but it was a heck of a lot easier to have him handle it and I'm happy with the finished result.

Just started this process this morning. Some shingles down, roof blown off barn & husband's work shed go blown back 2-3 feet.
