Edit: I apologize I should have put a brief summary. TLDR version: The Japanese Yen has been a currency that has diluted for years. The Bank of Japan at certain intervals buys billions of Yen on the open market to defend the value of their currency. Where do they get the money? The easiest way is to sell previously held US treasuries. This is bad timing for US because selling our treasuries will cause our yields to rise even more. Creating a chaos in our market. The FIMA program was made as a loan program to allow foreign governments to pledge their treasuries as collateral to FED in exchange for cash. This in effect keeps foreign governments from selling our treasuries and worsening our yields.

In Japans case, they plan on using the US cash by selling our dollars and buying the Yen in the open market to defend the currency. This will inflate our dollar by adding US currency to the global system. In essence it stops the treasury yields from rising further but in the end worsens inflation.

Is this one of the reasons the US 10 year yields dropped so much overnight despite the inflation report yesterday?

Some small portion of it has to do with a pulling out of the AI trade into safety, and the Nikkei is down about 5% right now.

I've always wondered how a country like Japan could run up a debt like that. They are proud, hardworking people.

Is corruption an issue there? They don't seem to be a welfare state. Maybe all those bullet trains never paid off.
