I am looking to pivot out of the industry I am currently in. I am paid well. I enjoy the people I manage. I have been on this team for a total of 12 years and managing it for almost 4. I manage a decent size P&L. My team is also like a small company within a larger one. We do purchasing, planning, legal, and touch a lot of other roles. I am just looking to get into something different to continue to grow and increase my experience, as I feel like I am currently capped where I am at.

Because I am paid well, I have been applying to positions that are somewhat of a stretch to align with my current compensation. I objectively feel like my experience does translate, but I have been getting zero communications outside of rejection emails. I am trying to decide if it's my resume, my history , the stretch goals , the market, or all of the above.

It does seem like every job I apply to has 500 applications. I have tried following up via email or LinkedIn messages after applying.

Is the market that bad right now, or do I need to objectively look at what I'm doing?

That's fair. I've been debating between that and does me staying longer pigeonhole me even more.

I've found it's tough to make major career pivots in most any market...but especially right now.

Hiring managers don't like to go out on a limb. As you mentioned, most good positions are getting hundreds of applications so why would they bother with someone who doesn't have relevant experience in that industry?

You likely need some personal contact with an "in" for that position, that can help sell your story.

I made a major pivot several years ago (from real estate to healthcare) but I think getting my MBA helped me "reset" somewhat. I'm not suggesting you do the same, but do realize it's going to be tough sledding if you're trying to get in through the front door.
