The retirement thread has me thinking about joining. I've been old enough for a while, but I have eschewed the idea of signing up. Should I reconsider?

I recently learned that you can sign up as a youngster. There is no age requirement.

I'm 52 but have never looked at it.

My wife signed me up. Its cheap but I haven't spent the time to dig thru all the mail and emails yet.

I was surprised to find there's a lot of discounts when you hit 55. I was at Dairy Queen with my wife and 8 year old recently and the cashier said we'd save 15% if I paid. Wife and kid thought it was funny.

Anyway, we looked around and its not uncommon at 55

They lost a lot of customers when the advertised in support of ObamaCare. And there are a ton of old folks groups with similar perks, but the easiest to join is the Senior Discounts group.

In my case, I didn't have a choice. I opted for a Medicare Supplement from United Healthcare and one of the requirements is that you had to join AARP. What a racket.

I turned 50 a few years back and started getting all their junk mail. I don't care for their political activism, so the mail goes in the trash. I have similar feelings about the NRA and their previous tactics in spite of being a 2A supporter. The difference for me is that the gun club where I am a member is a non-profit, and NRA provides the liability insurance. NRA membership is a requirement to be a member of the gun club.

They are extremely political, all-in for leftist and Democrat causes. If that doesn't bother you, no problem. If you don't want your dues supporting that side, don't bother.

What do they support, all I ever hear about is Social Security which I can understand given the demo.
