Howdy!

I'm curious to hear from any Ags as to what kind of "side hustles" they are currently doing that have been profitable (or crashed and burned for that matter).

I know this is a broad question but I've heard/read so many horror stories and many awesome stories of successful/unsuccessful "side hustles" but it has peaked my interest moving into 2024.

I think hearing from fellow Aggies instead of a massive Google search would be much more beneficial.

Thanks for any feedback!

My wife lucked in to meeting a sales rep for a gravel pit through a former co-worker. She puts 30-50 Facebook posts up in different communities around Texas. They have to change them every few weeks because Facebook changes the algorithm to not show them. Anyway, she answers a couple real basic questions and then sends the phone number to the sales rep. He then pays her a finder fee if he closes the sale. I was skeptical at first but she ended up bringing in about 2k last year for less an an hour of work a week.

I've looked around on Facebook for other ads of things for sale and it appears that there are portable building companies that do the same thing based on the amount of portable buildings that look like they're posted by stay at home moms

Have you thought about posting recipe videos on TikTok featuring a puppet? User name would then check out.

Depends on your wage requirements:

Gig driver - variety of industries here.
Independent Consulting - if you have enough credibility in your industry to pull it off.
Work part-time at a business doing something you love.

I live in a small town in CO, so I am a little limited on what I can do. However, I focused on the bigger industries or needs of the area. Side hustles I have done or am doing:

-rent out rooms in my house to seasonal workers(travelling nurses, USFS/BLM)
-3D printing and CNC work/design
-handyman services around town (Painting, mowing, yard cleanup)
-hunting guide
-packout services for hunters
-tracking services for hunters

In 2023 it brought in around $35K. I expect this year to be closer to $40k. Find things you are good at or enjoy and focus on that.

I've seen service businesses work, but they take commitment and hours, more like second job than a gig.

But one coworker I saw grow a side business into full time when his wife was laid off and started doing it for extra income, they have employees now. The business is marine upholstery.

Home health care. Know one school teacher doing the night shift at an elderly persons home. 7pm-6am 4 nights a week. Another lady is working a 60 hr shift thru the weekend. At 25/hour cash, it's a pretty good side hustle.

All night. The only problem is the elderly need help getting to/ from the bathroom 2-4 times each night.
Lots of elderly take a water pill to reduce swelling and that means getting up at night.

Credit card + bank bonuses. I sign up for a few credit cards per year with a high promotional miles bonus, I typically generate around $4k-5k per year in miles and free flights/hotels. I havent paid for a flight in 10 years or so. And I do this very passively, I dont actively go out seeking new cards to sign up for.

I have 3 bank bonuses Im doing now that will generate me around $2k for opening up new accounts and meeting the deposit requirements. I dont do these very often because they issue a 1099 at the end of the year and count as taxable income, but some of these are worth it.

You need money to do this but my SIL is a minority investor in fast food joints. He's about a 25% owner of 10@ Chick Salad Chicks and Fuzzy Taco's, and holds the license for 10 DFW area Dave's Hot Chicken franchises. He can tell you by looking at his phone which ones are profitable (all of them) and which need monitoring (some of them), that's the extent of his work. Sort of. His day job is way more profitable (attorney) but this keeps him occupied.

Chase. Wells Fargo. Amex. I follow the website doctor of credit and they're always posting which banks offer the best deals.

I work in the 3D scanning industry (scanable.com) and the 3D printing and CNC work has been on the radar many times.

I'm also a hunter and get where that could be a decent seasonal side hustle.

I'm pretty hip for an old.

But seriously, whoever that guy is, he's made a good name for himself. Some of his videos feature celebrity chef Jet Tila and his wife.

Depending on your desire to do "manual labor", taking care of residential yards or small commercial lots.
Generates very steady income and can also be expanded or reduced as you see fit. Also a plus if you like to mow. You can get zero turn mowers that will go through most gates (34 inch toro). Put on headphones and enjoy your evening/Saturday afternoons.

Got my real estate license back in 2017. Sell 2-3 homes a year to friends and family... had been great side money

I'm tracking with you on this. I can tell you know your way around and understand the landscaping/mowing biz. I can see how it could be a side hustle or even a full-time endeavor for that matter.

Thanks for the feedback.

Sometimes I daydream about an alternate reality where I got a dual degree in Entomology and Turfgrass management and start my own pest and lawn company. Obviously, I have been quite lucrative in this imaginary endeavor. I even have an idea for a service line that offers rich white women the option to have everything done with all electric equipment and "organic" pest control. It gives them the sense that they are saving the planet and I charge twice as much.

I would have been able to work outside and avoid having to live through the hellscape that is corporate America and learn the art of saying a lot of words without actually saying anything. Alas, it is only a daydream.

Do it on a Friday afternoon and then head to the chicken. In the late 90's that was a net $75 gain. $45 for my plasma and it only took $5 to get hammered.

If you are tech inclined and know how to properly secure crypto, the best side hustle I've ever found is farming crypto airdrops. It takes some skill n the tech side but once you get the fundamentals down it is life changing.

The pros are:
Low overhead and little upfront investment on most projects
You set the schedule for when you work
Some projects are so easy to do it literally feels like free money
Testnets projects are the best as the only investment is time
Cons
Many scammers and scams so you have to be careful and only use vetted sites
Some projects allude they'll do an airdrop but never do
Be careful in how you use funds as they can get locked in certain staking or liquidity mechanisms

If you're interested checkout
https://airdrops.io/

They keep track of almost all airdrops around and you can pick and choose which projects look interesting or lucrative.

I feel like refereeing sports at an HS level can start to pay. Twice a week, stay in shape, get to be around sports (if you like them)
