Nanny personal vehicle mileage question

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I let my nanny use my credit card to fill up her sedan whenever she wants, so she never comes put of pocket for gas, and I don't need to pinch pennies on it.

She drives a lot, so I realized I should compensate her for car wear and tear. I see AAA values that at around .10 cents a mile, which seems a low. I could also use the federal mileage number, but I already pay for the gas, and I know she doesn't keep track of miles.

Any suggestions?

if you asked this on the general board, the answers would be so entertaining. Sorry for derailing, I got nothing.

Just buy her a car and don't worry about it…..

When our employees use their personal vehicles for work purpose and company fleet cards for fuel, we reimburse them 25 cents/mile

You should be reimbursing her at the standard mileage rate published by the IRS, currently $0.655/mi. Stop paying for gas.

I might go that route, but not this year most likely.

I never in my life imagined someone from Walton Hall having a nanny!

If any of the miles you reimburse her for are personal (such as commuting) the reimbursement you provide her is taxable to her. You also could have issues with "reimbursing" her and she never provides you any record of her business miles.

The government sets a rate. Believe it is $0.65 per mile right now.

Edit, I should read all of the replies.

Is she driving as part of nanny duties (dropping off kids, running errands) or is this commuting mileage?

That's asking for a big time liability. No way I would consider this.

Do you not also have liability if an employee is driving in their personal vehicle as part of work duties?

If OP can afford a nanny with mileage benefits, I expect OP could also afford a decent umbrella insurance policy.

can you clarify why this would be more liability than her using her personal car? Obviously I already trust her to drive my kids all over town.

There are apps that make tracking mileage much easier. Look into those for her.

TripLog app. Super easy to use, provides weekly, monthly or annual reports.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.
