I'm new to investing and am looking to get some money in one of the S&P 500 index funds. Which do y'all suggest as the best? Have looked at VFINX, SWPPX, FXAIX, and SPY

Not S&P but VUG follows the CRSP US Large Cap Growth Index and has outperformed the S&P for the last decade.

I in VOO. Very low cost.

SWPPX has the lowest cost, I believe.

I have 90% of my investments there. No complaints.

You can just buy the spy.

Check out RSP as well. Most indexes are cap-weighted, whereas RSP is equally weighted across the S&P.

I'm in both VOO and RSP, the reason being that with the growth in tech, VOO was showing a little bit of sector bias, so I started building an RSP position.

SPY is 5-6 bps more expensive than VOO or IVV. Given the nature of these, I would not use SPY for long-term holdings. Seems the SPY is bigger and there is more trading volume in SPY, so if you are actively trading exceptionally large chunks, I suppose that might make the extra 5 bps worthwhile.

Otherwise, you are just leaving money on the table to choose SPY over the others.

SPY is only 0.65 bps higher cost than VOO. I think you are moving the decimal point too far.

SPY is better for using to write covered calls against. Other than that, I'd say that they are basically interchangeable (so pick the cheaper one).

Expense ratio for IVV is 0.04% SPY is 0.09%

100 bps is 1%
10 bps is 0.1%
5 bps is 0.05%

So, IVV is 5 bps cheaper

Correct me if I'm wrong...but that's how I've always done it.

VTI is the best (imo) because it literally represents the total US market (small, mid, and large cap). Plus it's one of the lowest index fees there is.

VOO is the next best if you just want large cap.

QQQ is basically FAANGMAN but with some extra stocks. slightly higher fee.

VXUS is the best international index. Low fee, similar to VTI but excludes US stocks and focuses on a representative mix of emerging and developed markets.

I personally only hold VTI and VXUS (80/20 mix).

SPY is pretty much only for day traders (due to the volume). If you're a long term investor and want an SP500 index, just go with VOO. It's cheaper and tracks the same stocks.
