Just found out that my old sweatshop is telling the so-called managers that they need to tell their minions that they need to use a PTO day for Monday even thought most of the roads and the entrance to the plant were flooded and near impassable for all but trucks.
Just curious..What about the rest of you guys.

That is such a bad management decision that it is almost hard to believe.
absolutely typical. Happens every flood. Even had a guy who drowned out his truck in front of the facility trying to get in and spent the day trying to salvage it....he was forced to use a vacation day OR get docked ( salaried). Absolutely par for the course for this place.

I would tell them they can hold a meeting and explain that decision to my direct reports. Unbelievable.

AND..you would no longer be a so-called manager if you did..... And don't kid yourself ... in this environment NO ONE is going to do a damn thing . They hold ALL of the cards and will for YEARS !

Which would probably be for the best as I wouldn't want to work for someone like that. Also not in oil/energy so that helps. We just had our best year ever and 2016 looks solid as well.

AG 76. What is the name of your old company? No sense in protecting them now...

The company was built on retribution and I still have a couple very close friends there that WOULD be a target if I make too much trouble . It's the main reason I turned down an offer from a labor lawyer to sue the hell outa them for their salaried policies. Its not hard to figure out if you are in anyway connected to the manufacturing side of the offshore industry. Well known sweatshop run by maniacs.

Mine had asked everyone to come in at 10 on that day, which is about as lenient as I've ever seen. PTO if you couldn't make it. Corporate policy pretty much never closes us...Hurricane Ike, ice storms, floods, whatever...just won't happen.

However, my immediate boss is cool and lets it slide or gives us off-the-books comp days if we make it in when most don't.

are these hourly people? i could see them saying they need to use PTO/sick day if they want to get paid for the day. Not sure what the HR policy is for non-salaried employees having to miss work due to natural disaster.

Outside of jobs where I had a billable hour target, I don't think I have ever officially taken a vacation day unless I was going to be out for a week.

No manager has ever cared enough to track them and have typically treated my teams like my described "you have a job to get done, so get it done and leave me alone"

This seems very "penny wise, pound foolish" to me. Nothing like beating down employee moral when everyone is already scared ****less.

your employer should evaluate their HSE policy on making employees commute/work during such events

My company sent out a message at 6am Monday saying business as usual. I said F that. I'm not getting out in this. They finally sent out a message at 9 saying business was closed. I guess when the HSE guy pulled up and realized there was no way to enter our building he decided to call it. Way to keep everybody safe.

I felt bad for the hourly people who don't really have a choice. Either risk your safety or risk your job. There's a reason our company will never show up on one of the "top places to work" lists

At 8am it was announced open, at 10am it was announced close.

Apparently the parking lot flooded during that time.

Suggested that everyone work from home where possible and they actually shut down our production facility in Galena Park as well, which was surprising.

no..these are salaried workers. you know the ones that the gods constantly harass and hound to put in extra time and Saturdays to complete their pet projects in order to reap a bigger executive bonus...and then force them to use their EARNED PTO on a Monday..EVEN if they had worked all day on Saturday for NOTHING !!!!!

We were just forced to cut-back to 32 hours a week, so unfortunately I dont have Friday "off" anymore even though I tried to make it in. Damn O&G market...

You seem to have a lot of stored hatred for your previous employer. Maybe that is sour grapes for time lost years ago but dude, go live your life. Move on from that era.

It takes a while to get of an abusive relationship and if he is keeping his vitriol to this place, I say more power to him.

Ragoo is correct. But it does take a LOT to move on past decades of that crap. When it was 60-80 hour weeks with very few days away coupled with an overwhelming culture of pure abuse and absolute EVIL..it takes a while to de-compress.

Used 8 hours of PTO for Monday. "Worked from home" on Tuesday.

Our offices closed and gave us the day off. Office was open on Tuesday but people were allowed to work from home.

We sent out a notice around 10:30am this morning allowing people to leave today whenever the feel they need to especially with the rains expected around rush hour.

Our facility was closed, so our company policy is that we will pay for 8 hours. If you are eligible for overtime, you need to make that time up if you want to get paid for that time. Very few are allowed to work OT, however. Salaried do not need to use PTO and obviously overtime is not applicable. Were we open, and we were yesterday, and you couldn't come in because your house was flooded or something similar, then you would need to use PTO. I think we are being fair.

Sounds like quite a big difference between between this place and the the OP's former employer, and we use the same street to get here. Come to think of it, we were without power so I have to think they were as well. What if someone showed up but the facility can't handle them. Doesn't sound well thought out.

Lol. Now we just got an email saying use PTO for Monday or don't get paid. So not only did they force people to get up Monday and try to drive to work only to cancel work forcing everybody to turn around and head back home in the flooded streets, now they are forcing those people to use their vacation days for the privilege.

No wonder morale is low and we continue to lose market share.

Remember this when someone starts the company line about how you guys need to put in that extra effort ( see Sat or 10 hr days) to accomplish some hot task du jour..... Two Way street MY ASS !!!! remember Monday.

they sent an email early saying the office was open, but they highly encouraged everyone to use their own judgment and work remotely if necessary. which is the right thing to do. and zero pressure or mention of any PTO necessary.

I know you are referring to the current state of the economy, and agree with you.

But people need to be careful with this mentality. I stayed at a bad job for too long because of this thought process.

hah wow, I was reading and saw sweatshop, and immediately thought DQ, which I worked for years back.

That's pretty much what we called it.

I can see them forcing PTO use. That place was rough. I was a drafter, and they wouldn't let us use the microwave outside of lunch hours.

But, this was specifically the drafting department, all hourly.. They weren't harsh like this on salaried employees that I remember.

I left because a promotion of sorts was offered to me after being there about 8 months by another department to move up to designer, and drafting boss wouldn't have it because 'those who have been longer than you wouldn't be very happy with that'
hah.. IDGAF if they can't manage to get a better opportunity presented to them.

Man, this compared to my last job in O&G.. If I had a dentist appt at 11, I'd go on vacation and not even use PTO. Boss just says, keep your phone on you.
