Going on a cruise in the next couple of months and was wondering if anyone has used a travel router connect to the ships wifi plan. Instead of paying $20.99 per person per day?

Well technically my wife and daughter's plan to get WIFI! I just am not sure I trust what they have read and heard about it.

Should theoretically work fine as long as you have a way to get to the (likely) captive portal page via the first device you connect through the router and authenticate for the day. Only drawback would be that any devices you hang off of the router won't work very far away from the router (outside of your room). I used to do something very similar with airplane wifi when you used to have to pay, used my phone as a hotspot / repeater to get my other devices connected, the family's devices when traveling as a herd, etc.

My guess is that a router wouldn't have sufficient range to work well. Some cruise lines specifically prohibit them. You can search "your cruise line prohibited items" to find a list of what is specifically prohibited. Remember, all cruise lines reserve the right to search your belongings and confiscate anything you bring onboard that they deem prohibited. I wouldn't risk it. I've seen people try to use Starlink roaming equipment and have it confiscated. It allegedly interferes with the ship's communications and navigation systems. The same goes for Garmin locators, etc.

On a Silver Seas cruise now in the Torngat Park using Starlink with great results. Inuits in this area celebrate Musk for developing Starlink.
This line is all inclusive

Last year I was on a ship in the Antarctic that had Starlink. It was really nice to be able to use WhatsApp and call my wife back home each day and tell her what I saw. I was amazed at how well the wi-fi connection worked, although tbh I don't really know anything about Starlink. Also really nice to be able to watch youtube vids after the sun goes down, when nothing much else was going on.

A wife plan for only $20.99 per person per day? That's a steal. Most wives are much more expensive.

What cruise line? Most of them they are not allowed and will be confiscated before boarding. For example, they are prohibited on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival, Virgin, etc.

Royal Caribbean, so yes after some more research they are banned on the ship even though a bunch of youtubers say you can use them. I think we will just pay for the zoom internet or whatever. This is our fist time with family on a cruise and they just seem to nickel and dime your for everything.

You can also use your cell phone to share a wifi connection to multiple other devices. They aren't going to confiscate your phone.

Consider an all-inclusive the next time you cruise. It might not be any cheaper, but at least you won't feel like you are being nickel and dimed to death....

The newer boats on RC have the Starlink wifi and it's worth every penny. Just buy the Wifi plan.
