Does anyone have experience for going to Oberammergau for the Passion Play (2030)?

At Oberammergau in 1999, I promised myself that I would come back and do two things in Oberammergau:

1.) Climb the Kofel.
2.) Attend the Passion Play.

I took my daughter to the top of the Kofel this summer.

Can anyone provide advice for 2030?

If you're a travel agent who has booked this event in the past, I do want to hear from you.

If it were me, this is how I'd do it.

That river cruise is a very popular option, and I was going to also suggest it, but from what I've seen about your travel style idk if it's your speed.

I have not booked this in the past, but I am working on it for a group of friends who does not want to do the cruise but does want to be there for the play as part of a larger German land based trip.

Wish I had more advice, but I haven't done much here. Hotel + Ticket packages (and standalone tickets) go on sale in 2028.

ETA: I chatted with some colleagues who have booked this and the Viking cruise in particular will sell out years in advance, if not already. Tauck, Uniworld, and AMA also had them last time so it's expected they will as well. Accommodations do fill up really far in advance, especially since so many travel providers secure blocks and most of the inventory doesn't go on sale to the public.

It might be worth considering one of the packages or working with a local DMC to help secure good lodging and tickets.

Happy to make recommendations or help if you're looking for it.

I'm up for the cruise… in 2040.

Seriously, I appreciate the advice.

True Story. About 35 years ago we were travelling in Germany. All we had was a travel guide. No reservations anywhere. Pulled into Oberammergau around 5:30 pm, went to a guesthouse and asked if they had a room. The clerk responds "My God man, it's the middle of the Passion Play! People have booked all our rooms years in advance!" I repeated "So, do you have a room?" He responds "Actually yes, we had a cancellation earlier today." We ended up with the best room in the place.

my mother appeared in the Passion Play in 1950 as an extra while she and my grandparents were stationed near Garmish after the war......my mother was 7.

The play was cancelled in 2020 for Covid reasons and we went in 2022 on a trip with Tauck. The trip included Germany, Austria, Switzerland and North Italy. The play was truly amazing and worth the trip. Not sure what might be included but the Tauck website has some information. Talking to some of the shop owners and then seeing them on stage was truly a treat.

YES!! Do it! We went in 2022 on Viking River Cruise and it was wonderful! Darling little German town and the Passion Play was wonderful. Viking will take care of getting your tickets, etc. We loved cruising the Danube and would highly recommend it.

I second or third or fourth the recommendations to take a river cruise and let them do all the heavy lifting on transportation, lodging, tickets, etc. At the last passion play we went with Viking river cruises and they ended up taking care of literally everything, plus had really great seats for us. As a gee whiz, we had gone to Oberammergau several years prior while vacationing through Germany and visited a small souvenir shop and bought a few things while there. We went back to his store the 2nd time but it was closed. Come to find out he was up on the stage in the play!

FYI Just got an email from Tauck with instructions to register on their site for upcoming trip information as they figure it out. Both land and river trips.
