I'm looking at taking the fam for a late September beach trip to the Gulf that coincides with my wife's bday (her request, not mine!). It says the temps average a high of lower 80s. Has anyone traveled this time and was it warm enough to be truly enjoyable? I'm also thinking about the kids being in a pool and it getting warm enough. TIA.

My family does a massive family reunion at crystal beach the 3rd weekend of September every year. I can assure you the gulf water will still be plenty warm and enjoyable.

Gulf water temp is still 80+ in late Sept, so should be good. But if by beach trip you mean Galveston, Charles Barkley will advise against.

Seriously though, I assume you're talking about Galveston/Bolivar, or the Florida Panhandle / Alabama.

I've been in Galveston for 3 years now and I'm surprised how busy it is on weekends all the way through September.

You don't live in Texas do you? Here in South Texas (So you've got options like Port A / South Padre) It's 90+ degrees until Halloween.

It's actually a great time to go.

Smaller crowds and the weather is warm enough for the beach but still manageable.

We used to go to Galveston for a week every mid-September.

The Gulf Coast is pretty big. Where exactly are you thinking?

Gulf Shores/Orange Beach is very enjoyable in September after all the kids are back in school. I'd go there.
