Does anyone have a particular recommendation for a place that they loved?

In Rothenburg, I am staying inside the walls.

In Berlin, I'll be right next to the Unter den Linden station.

In Munich, I am across the street from the central train station.

I just got back from Munich. We ate here and it is very close to the train station. It was good.

The church across the street has the devils footprint in the narthex. Google Munich devils footprint. It is an old wives tale but interesting to pop in.

Hoofbrau Haus is a few blocks further away and we enjoyed it.

Rothenberg - It's been too many years since I've been (well 10 years this fall) but my aunt/uncle go every year. Now I'm sure these aren't fancy, but they do enjoy food.

I don't know proximity to train station but Spatenhouse by the opera was my fav meal last month. Great location as well.

Piggybacking because we'll be nearby in December for the Christmas markets, Munich and Nuremberg. Any recs for Nuremberg?

Had clients in Nuremberg for the markets last year. I sent them to Trodelstuben, Wirsthaus Hutt'n, and Tisane and heard nothing but great things!

Busy time of year so definitely make reservations!

We enjoyed Zum alten markt in Munich.

The Augustiner Biergarten not far from the Munich central train station was our favorite but the beer and food is about the same in all of them.

The main hofbrau felt like a tourist trap and was our least favorite.

We stayed at the 25hours hotel right next to train station and it felt more like Beirut than Munich including some ahole failing to pick pocket my wife.

The brewery there will also have their winter warmer which my wife still talks about. I finally found the photo.

The market is awesome but it's crazy crowded, especially on weekends. It's a walled city, so it gets pretty packed in. But it's the home of lebkuchen, so it's worth dealing with the crowds.

I haven't been to Rothenburg ob der Tauber since winter 1978 when I was 8 years old.

It was an amazing experience.

We stayed inside the city walls in a hotel that was over 900 years old. The ceilings were freakishly low because I guess people were a lot shorter back in 1000 AD.

I'm not certain it was this hotel but if it was, they've added some paint since we visited.

Forgot to add to go to Pusser's Rum Bar in Munich. Real blast of a place and the bartenders are incredible. On Falkenturm Strasse.

Second note, make sure you are prepared clothing-wise for it to be really cold. We got hit by the mother of all snow storms a few years back.

Rothenburg is one of those things that you have to have seen in order to believe that it is actually possible.

In Munich, Spatenhaus an der Oper. Eat on the second floor. It is the same price as the beer hall below but the food is incredible.

After dinner on the first night at Alter Keller, we went to Herrnschlösschen. Alter Keller is a line drive on very traditional German cuisine. Herrnschlösschen is the sort of (fixed-menu only, high gastronomy) place that will eventually have a Michelin star. It is the best meal that I have enjoyed in Germany. Wild venison on the menu is taken locally.

I have not been to Lebanon, but I think that I saw what you saw. For the first 3/4 mile north or south, the neighborhood has … character. That said, Momma Bao was my older daughter's favorite meal of the trip. Going east, on Bayerstrasse, things seem to get better pretty fast. I stayed at Le Meridian, on the next block going west, and I walked by the 25 hours frequently. I am a pretty loyal Marriott customer, and the hotel was worth dealing with the urban ambiance.

I think that the walk from the train station / Le Meridien to the Marienplatz was 18 minutes.

Free tip for anyone reading: The laundromat at 6 Bayerstrasse (on the same block with 25 hours) takes Apple pay, has a coffee machine, and draws a customer base that is not threatening.

There's also a Lederhosen shop in the building with Le Meridien, and the pricing was pretty favorable.

I was never disappointed with any food, regardless if it was planned or just hungry and stumbled in.

One that I would definitely do and it is great for lunch on a nice day is what is effectively a biergarten and food court - Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm (Chinese Biergarten). Make sure your walking route takes you past the surfers on the standing wave at Eisbachwelle.

I cannot recall where we ate in Rothenburg ob der Tauber but we just asked the family who ran the hotel we stayed at (it was across the street from one of the biggest Christmas stores).

But you definitely want to do the city tour. You might in the main square next to the bell tower and you see a lot and learn a lot about the unique history of the town. It is "free" ... you're expected to tip the guide and it's easy to find info on what is adequate if you really enjoy it.

And if you are having a bad day, that Biergarten will make it a nice day! Had my children not been with me, I should have stayed there for liters.

This is dangerous advice if you have children with you, particularly if you have first visited the Biergarten. You may end up being coerced by the children into swimming in the canal. (In truth, we had packed swimsuits for this plan, and we changed into our swimsuits in the public restrooms at the Biergarten… bring coins for the restroom).

I had a delightfully memorable encounter with The Night Watchman this month. Our paths crossed in the street, before the tour, and I stopped to thank him for his work and recount for him my enjoyment of the tour in the summer of 1999. I had consumed a liter at Alter Kellar before seeing him.

When I later took the tour, he called me forward, by name, to serve as his "assistant." I was used as the straight man for most of his jokes, which endlessly amused my children. I ended up successfully passing the "Night Watchman Exam," which consisted of singing the night watchman's hymn. My children recorded video. I have no doubt that, when I take my grandchildren to Rothenburg, my children will tell my grandchildren about their prior experience of the tour.

Munich also has a night watchman, FWIW. I saw him pass through the main square at the evening demonstration of the glockenspiel.
