I'm thinking of surprising my wife with a trip to Octoberfest in Munich for her 40th birthday. She is nearly full fledge German as her Oma was born in Berlin in 1930. She obviously survived the war and married my wife's grandfather who was in the service and served there in the early 1950's. Anyhow, what should I start doing now that it's a year in advance? Any tips? Any agents or services I should look into? thanks!

That thread reminded me to ask about next year. I don't think a single, already in Munich is the same as planning a trip a year in advance for 2 or more people, but I digress.

You really have to plan it pretty far out. Ideally, you should book lodging in Jan/Feb at the latest.

I cannot stress this enough: Go on a weekday and not a weekend. Reserving spots in tents is kind of like a lottery but your chances are much better M-Thur than Fri-Sun. We did attempted at two tents and got reservations at the Hofbrau tent. This website will be your friend: https://www.oktoberfest.de/en/beer-tents/reservations-at-oktoberfest

On a separate evening, we wandered into the Loewenbrau tent and got some tables by sheer luck. Still, there were plenty of spots in the outside Biergarten (and the other outdoor Biergartens next to the tents normally have availability).

There are a ton of carnival rides there, but I highly recommend visiting die Oide Wiesn. Which is basically all the old-school rides and they're like 1.50 EUR a piece. It's super nostalgic and feels like you're at an old fair.

It's a blast, albeit a crazy expensive and exhausting one.

Flying back from MUC right now and went to Oktoberfest. Get into a tent - we did Hoffbrau. 5 years ago we did Spatenbrau. And try to reserve a seat/table. I went with business contacts but i expect there are other ways to get wrist bands. We were there on Monday night and it was lively and fun especially for a weeknight. Go to the carnival (like Texas state fair or Houston Rodeo) during the day during the week. Not crowded during the day especially during the week. We stayed at the Marriott City West and it was great! Built/opened in 2023, breakfast included, rooftop beer garden, and nicely modern (and American LOL). on the train line to anywhere in Munich but also easy uber ride. Taxis from the airport are over 100 euros but I'm sure there are cheaper ways to get and from the airport. Munich is a beautiful, clean and safe city. We had a great time!
