Headed to Bangkok on Tuesday for a 10 day Asia trip. I have the food mapped out pretty well but I am looking for must see's and do's. Itinerary looks something like this:

Tokyo
- 7 Hour Layover at Haneda

***Fly from Tokyo to Bangkok****

Bangkok
- 5 Days

Vietnam
- Tentative Spend 2 Days in Hanoi/ 3 days in Saigon

***Fly from Saigon to Tokyo***

Tokyo
- 10 Hour Layover at Haneda.

Other than my flight to Bangkok and out of Saigon, what would you do or see. Most of SE Asia is on the table. I just need to end in Saigon as that is where my departing flight back to the states is.

Saigon and Hanoi are both mega big cities. But I prefer Hanoi over Saigon. Personally, I would rather spend time in Hoi An along the coast over spending time in Saigon. It's a smaller town that still has a lot of the French colonial influence. You can fly from Hanoi to Da Nang and take a transfer/cab to Hoi An. It's about 30-45 minutes away. The food in the north and along the coast is better than the food in the south IMO.

In Thailand, I think 5 days in Bangkok is a quite a lot. Kho San road is cool and all, but the constant barrage of people asking to go to ping pong shows gets old after awhile. See if you can peel away to Chiang Mai (they have an overnight train) for a couple of days.

Im not married to 5 days in Bangkok at all.

Another idea would be to head to Siem Reap in Cambodia for 2 days or so. I probably wouldnt have time to hit Hanoi if I did that and I would miss Angor Wat.

10 days in Asia is really not enough time which means I will be back.

definitely agree with spending some time in Chiang Mai. Nice contrast to Bangkok.
As mentioned, can take the train or one of the local airlines.

Siem Reap is a dump. Going to Cambodia and not seeing Angkor Wat should be a crime punishable by death. It's a top 5 thing you'll get to see.

I have always gone through Narita which is a really great town to visit. Haneda is closer to Tokyo though. Trains in Japan are the best and can be a game to use them effectively.

I second the comments on spending time in Hoi An it's awesome. Also Chang Mai and Cambodia/Angkor Wat. If you have time the drive from Chang Mai up to NE of Chang Rai is nice. It's where Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos, meet.

You are in the right track. 1-2 days in Bangkok is plenty. Angkor Wat would be at the top of my list, after that probably Luang Prabang, Laos.

Oddly enough, Spore Ag and I ran into each other back in spring of 2019 outside of the Bahn Mi shop Bourdain visited in Hoi An.

My 2 cents on BKK & LOS (land of smiles):

You can hit the Bangkok highlights in 2 days.

Take one morning or afternoon to see Wat Arun, Wat Pho, and The Grand Palace. The best way is to take the BTS to Taksin and then take the Chao Phraya express boat (orange line) up to stop 8. You can take a ferry across the river to Wat Arun and then come back and walk to Wat Pho and then the Grand Palace.

Go to the Jim Thompson house museum and MBK for some knock off goods shopping. They are at the same BTS stop.

If you want to buy something go to Chinatown to visit the gold shops (they are everywhere, but the best ones are in Chinatown). Thai gold is 23 Karat, so the jewelry has a deep gold color and is very malleable. I would spend money on a small gold chain over junky souvenirs.

One night go to Nana entertainment complex to visit some go-go bars. Hit Obsessions on the bottom floor if you want the Katoey experience. You could hit Soi Cowboy as an alternative, but avoid Patpong - it was bad before COVID, and I hear it's worse now.

Hit one of the many rooftop bars across Bangkok. The Sky Bar at the Lebua tower is the one from the Hangover 2, but it's always crowded since the movie came out. Personally i like Octave. Vertigo is also very popular.

As far as food, eat street food. Make sure you get Som Tam and ask them to make it Isaan style w/ the crab.

If you spend more time in Bangkok, then you can do a day trip to either Ayutthaya or The Bridge Over River Kwai.

Beyond Bangkok, Chiang Mai is nice but far (overnight train ride is the best way there). If you don't want to lose as much time traveling then look into taking a bus to Hua Hin for a laid back beach or Pattaya for a not so great beach and crazy go-go and beer bar scene that makes Bangkok seem tame. If you don't mind flying you could hit Koh Samui or Phu-ket. You should be able to get direct flights from Phu-ket to Saigon (or maybe Hanoi).

Make sure you have your onward travel out of Thailand booked before you check in to fly there. Airlines are supposed to check for this (some do a better job than others). Immigration sometimes randomly checks as well, and if you don't have onward travel booked they won't let you in. Also, make sure you have 20K Thai Baht equivalent in cash (~$600) in hand when you go through Immigration.

Outside of Thailand, I agree w/ other posts - Angkor Wat is a must see. If you don't see it this trip then you need to come back. I can't comment on Vietnam as I haven't been there. My wife spent 3 weeks there traveling around and said it was very beautiful.

Seconding some suggestions that have already been made:

-Go to Hoi Ann. My favorite place in Vietnam.
-Hue, Vietnam. A little under the radar (in my opinion) but a very cool town with the Imperial City, Thien Mu Pagoda, and the Royal Tombs. It's on the way from Hanoi to Hoi Ann.
-Grand Palace and Chinatown in Bangkok
-Angkor Wat is incredible. Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia and is a nice city. You can also visit Cheung Ek killing field and prison museum outside of Phnom Penh. It's a very somber, disturbing, and sobering experience (probably very similar to concentration camps in Germany, Poland, etc.).
-I personally loved HCMC more than Hanoi but I was sick in Hanoi so I didn't get to explore the city as much. They are both wonderfully chaotic. The War Remnants Museum in HCMC in interesting..
-I spent almost 3 months in SE Asia and it wasn't enough time.

I do remember that. He gave high recommendations on the restaurant which were greatly appreciated.

Thank you to everyone for the advice regarding my Asia trip. I had to narrow down the options presented with the 10-days I will be there and settled on Bangkok-Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh.

I'd love to hit some of the rural portions of each country on another trip but the logistics and travel time would eat up too much time on this current jaunt.

Highly recommend hiring a private tour guide for a day to hit the Bangkok sights. I have previously used https://yourthaiguide.com/ and can recommend them...very reasonable rates (as is everything in Thailand for the most part).

If you have extra time in Bangkok I'd suggest a quick (day trip or overnight) down to Pattaya just to see the Sanctuary of Truth - it's pretty amazing. They also have a drive-thru zoo down around there. You can hire a driver to drive you down for the day if you don't have/want a car. Stay the night in Pattaya if you like that sort of nightlife scene...

A private taxi to Pattaya from BKK will run 1200-1400 Baht. I recommend Mr. T. You can take the BTS to Ekkamai station and grab a bus to Pattaya for about 120 Baht. It's about 2 hrs from Sukhumvit area of BKK to Patts.

Nong Nooch gardens is a good place to visit in Pattaya.

You have to walk down Soi 6 in the afternoon (after 3pm). Visit Tree Town at night for some drinks. Soi LK is the best spot for go go bars now. Walking Street is on the decline but worth checking out if you've never been there.

- Hoi An is great.
- I could spend 5 days in Bangkok easily, but you could always go down to Pattaya for a couple of nights if you want to be on the beach. From Pattaya you can day trip to Koh Lan.
- I lived in Siem Reap for a couple of years and enjoyed the city. Angkor Wat is unbelievable and, if you can squeeze it in, then go.
- I much prefer Saigon to Hanoi.
