I will spend about a week and a half in mainland Greece in mid December. My understanding is that the public transit/train service is not nearly as reliable as other European countries. So, I'll drive.

I'll likely pay without using points but many travel sites as well as Chase travel recommend numerous companies that I've not had experience with: Centauro, Sur Price, Europcar, Abby Car, etc. I can see recommendation ratings for each, but I'm not sure how helpful those are.

If you have suggestions on any to avoid, I'd appreciate the insight. I'm happy stick with Budget, Avis, National, etc. if I'm more likely to have a smoother experience. I understand however that any car rental company can disappoint you.

Thanks.

I've used both Sixt and Europcar when US rentals were unavailable in Europe and the experience has been fine with both. These are both reputable and established.

Side note: I always pay with a credit card (not debit) and take pics before and after when I rent abroad to cover myself.

Enjoy Greece! We just got back and thought it was incredible.

I used Sixt in Scotland and it was fine.

Have used Europcar twice on UK trips.

Like said above, use credit card to pay. Your card company may offer collision coverage free of charge, allowing you to decline with the auto rental company.

Also like said above, inspect car before departing rental lot. If any exterior issues, note them with rental agency, and take photos of four sides of vehicle for reference.

Thanks, folks.

Many of the companies I've referenced above are quoted cheaper (some drastically so) than our domestic companies. I just wanted to avoid a "get what you pay for" lesson.

I've rented before and exercise all of the suggestions above in regards to covering yourself. I'll give the best quote a shot.

I just need to decide if an SUV is necessary for Greece's hills and mountains in winter or if a standard economy will suffice. My assumption is for Athens north towards Macedonia, I'm probably at low risk for issues.

Thanks again.

You will be fine in a sedan assuming you are staying on pavement.
