I have had a Turo reservation since April for Labor Day weekend. Regular rental cars are ridiculous right now.

Moments ago, I receive notification that Turo is cancelling the reservation due to a recall on the vehicle, which seems odd since (1) why does Turo care and (2) don't vehicles have recalls all the time? 2021 Suburban is the vehicle.

The vehicle owner says he will match the Turo rate and still rent the vehicle. I'm a little concerned to be operating outside the Turo app. Are we going to land at the airport only to get ghosted?

What would you do?

ETA- it appears that Turo does inn fact automatically cancel reservations 7 days out if there is an active recall:
Quote:

  • If we find a safety recall on a listed vehicle, we'll:
    • Notify you via email and text
    • Display a notification
    • Link to the recall at the bottom of your vehicle's settings page
  • We'll temporarily restrict your vehicle to give dealership time to make repairs
  • We'll cancel at no charge or penalty to you upcoming trips seven days in advance so guests have time to make new arrangements

The recall for the vehicle is:
Quote:

Aug 11,2022
Manufacturer Recall NumberN222372380
NHTSA Recall Number AWAITING#
Recall Status Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available
Summary General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain 2021 2022 model year Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV vehicles, 2021 2022 model year Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe vehicles, and 2021 2022 model year GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles. In certain of these vehicles, the rivet that retains the buckle to the mounting bracket in the left or right side third-row seatbelt buckle assembly may not have been properly formed during the manufacturing process.
Safety Risk If the third-row seatbelt assembly is not properly riveted, it may not properly restrain occupants in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

That bit of research eases my mind that this isn't a scam. This Turo owner has a fleet of cars, so that's a bit more reassuring.

I have used Turo twice, saving a ton on both and getting a much better car than any rental.

Each time I had a feeling of this is a total scam but it was great.

The policy and excuse seems on the level, but I would be concerned going off app. Does the person have a good history?

I would likely just look for another option on Turo, even if it meant paying more (but less than a rental)

Edit- didn't see he had a fleet, will he honor another car from his heard?

Make a free reservation with one of the big boys and have that as your back up if dude seems sketchy. Dude is probably as pissed at Turo as you are. That is his money his is losing. Insurance on it is the key question here. I have no answers for that.

He is honoring the same rental price with the same vehicle. I am not overly concerned with the recall issue and do not plan on using the 3rd row for seating anyway.

I do have a free Avis reservation as a backup, at more than 2x the cost ($1615 vs. $677).

Insurance would be my worry. Make sure you get a formal "rental" agreement if you go off app. This will cover you in some ways, but almost assuredly make his insurance on the vehicle deny any claim filed. Which means your insurance would be primary, so best to double check with them.

Well he ought to give you a lower rate now. He's saving a lot in fees, I am sure.

true. I wondered if that was part of the motivation for the letting the recall and automatic cancellation take place.

Per the recall notes in your post, no remedy is available. So doubt he's just riding with the recall to void Turo reservations, book outside the app, and save on fees. He doesn't have an available option to fix it.

This is the outfit. I have full coverage through Nationwide and understand that their policies do cover rentals (and have seen Reddit threads saying they cover Turo rentals as well).

Rentals and Turo are two different things. Source: me, I work in insurance.

Rented on Turo twice this summer. First was a suburban for a family vacation where we did 2000 miles, and the other was a luxury SUV for a long weekend. Both owners had a fleet of vehicles and 5 star rating.

We aren't sure if there was a chip in the window from a rock during our trip, but we had insurance, and the owner probably preferred to keep his 5 star ratings, so it wasn't even mentioned.

Agree with comments above, was excellent back up plan, felt more nervous driving these cars than with Hertz, but it all worked out with zero issues. Price difference was significant. One of Turo owners even delivered the car to my house for free.

Picked up an m4 in San Fran at a restaurant parking lot to drive in Napa all week. Seamless and great experience. Owner was top notch guy.

Turo is great. Go with highly rated owners.

Do you guys get insurance through Turo or just cross your fingers? Chase is very specific about not covering cars rented through Turo.

Was going to try them out with a Tesla in Chicago in October, but once I got the Turo fee and min insurance it was cheaper to get a car at an off-airport Hertz.

Through turo. It's cheap.

Turo is the way to go.
If you've never used it before, yes the first time feels like buying something on Craigslist. But it is legit...

Some Turo renters will meet you outside baggage claim and let you drive off immediately (they uber back)...can't get easier than that.

Also, similar to AirBNB...renters rate your ability to stick to their policies (cleanliness, fueled up, timely pickup and dropoff, etc.) and you rate the experience. It's a good credit system.
