Flying through Heathrow. Is that enough time to get into the city and do some things during the day before heading back to the airport?

12 hours is plenty of time. Plan on it taking 2 hours from getting off the plane, through immigration and then to Paddington on the Heathrow Express direct train.
This. I was surprised how fast immigration was when I went to London last year. It was very quick and easy.ATM9000 said:OilManAg91 said:

What? No way it takes that long. Maybe half that time with the express immigration gates in place now (assuming you aren't traveling with kids) and no bags. Maybe.
And be careful with the Heathrow Express, it is PROBABLY your best bet to get into central London but sometimes taking the Piccadilly line in makes more sense,
