I'm planning to take my son (10 year old) on a little Texas History jaunt over his spring break. And I just found out that the Alamo is in the middle of a long term renovation. It has been a few years since I've been there and I wanted to know if it would be worth the time for this with my son?

Or any other Texas History trip ideas? I was thinking possibly doing Gonzalez, Goliad and San Jacinto. Maybe State Capitol and Bob Bullock Museum?

Thoughts? Tips? Other ideas?

Probably limited to 2-3 days and not crazy expensive.

The Alamo is undergoing a big facelift, but it's still accessible. And you'll still get your pictures:

(This was January.)

And if you're in San Antonio, don't forget the other missions.:

Presidio la Bahia is probably more impressive than those in San Antonio, but that may be an overload.

Bullock Museum would be a really nice stop to keep the theme going, but to break up looking at old missions.

Depending on where you're coming from, Washington on the Brazos might be worth a stop.

If I was doing it, I'd accompany the history stops with some local barbecue stops. Celebrate Texas right.

I posted this on another thread, but I'll post it here as well.

We took our kids (8 and 10) to the Alamo for the first time a few months ago (end of October I think). There was a big BLM group (I think they were Black Hebrew Israelites or something like that) right in front of the place with mics and amps screaming about how how my kids and all the other whiteys were still slave owners or some such. Freaked the hell outta my kids and pretty much ruined the experience for us. You could hear them all throughout the place because they had their PA system turned up so loud.

Just a heads-up. I don't know how often this kind of thing occurs, but it pretty much ruined the experience for us.

not exactly "texas" history, but we took our kids to the naval museum in Galveston a couple weeks back. They enjoyed the sub, and battle ship there. Could do that and San Jacinto in one day easily.

Don't visit last October - noted.

Honestly just worth an afternoon in Gonzales. The "battle" was in a field outside of town near Cost, not really anything to see there.

Head downtown and see the old jail, Texas Heroes Square.
Memorial museum is nice, but very small.
There are some really nice old Victorian houses, but I doubt a kiddo would be interested.
Get some BBQ at Baker Boys on your way out of town.

You could also take a detour through Ottine & see Palmetto State Park. There's a nice hike through all the palms.
Kids also would like the paddleboats.
The wildflowers will be amazing in a month.

Waco - Suspension Bridge, Texas Ranger Museum, Doris Miller statue
Galveston - all kinds of stuff, especially 1900 Storm Survivor houses and buildings.

And I'm still bent out of shape my grandparents taking us to Round Top as a day excursion from Galveston.

If you're in the Central Texas area you could stop by Ft Parker south of Mexia and tell the story of Cynthia Parker and her Comanche son Quanah. There is a state park nearby in case you wanted to camp.

applaud all the suggestions above
in Austin -
My kids love the story of Treaty Oak - the good cool history and the recent story of vandalism
We discovered Texas State Cemetery - lots of Texas History is buried there
my GGGmother is buried there in Confederate Veterans Home area Nancy Marie McDonald Polk
- tell her TheShiek said hi
The Capitol including the underground extension on north side is really cool

At Goliad - the Presidio La Bahia has on overnight guest quarters like apartment you can stay the night in
I'm sure its booked for the next week The Quarters

back in San Antonio
The Missions are really cool - especially looking at them as a group including finding the pieces of the Aqueduct still running water and some of the Chapels still serving as neighborhood and family churches

If you visit the treaty oak, here is a really good, short podcast episode about the vandalism. It's a few years old, but it's a good companion piece before a visit. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/criminal/id809264944?i=1000362031511

It may be too late, but contact your senator or representative for a tour of the top of the capital dome.

It is free, but has to be scheduled.

One of my favorite trips to the capital. Second would be every time I go with my CHL - I love the looks as I bypass the line.

So you went to vacation in Galveston and wasted a day driving to Round Top?
