Does anyone have recent knowledge of wait times for passport application process?

All 3 of my daughters (between 2-9 years) needed theirs done. Recently, we found a great deal to go to Costa Rica right after Christmas. After jumping through all sorts of hoops to get BCs and a DL replaced, we got their applications sent, in person, last week. I decided to pay for the expedited fee on each, even though we'd heard recent anecdotal stories of standard applications being done as soon or earlier than expedited.

is roughly 12 weeks enough time to get their passports back to us? I did get trip insurance, but I have no idea if it covers anything like this. Some told us not to bother, that the DoS had caught up and there is no risk of having to cancel our trip. Others have told us that even with expedited applications, lead times are more like 18-20 weeks.

Anyone?

I sent my son's off the first week of August, and we got it back last week. It went to the Colorado office.

I did not pay to expedite it.

Thanks for the reply. So, about 7 weeks, non-expedited. You've never met a less lucky SOB than me, so I'm crossing my fingers that I'm not an outlier in a few months:-)

Oh, I was worried and did not expect it back this soon. The lady at the post office told my son it would be 18 weeks. We have a trip to Banff planned for Christmas. I was so glad to see that envelope last week!

I hear you. I'm already checking the online portal to see the status (in just 1 week, it's already "In Process", which is a start).

Now, to start keeping an eye on the coming airline flight/worker problem brewing. I've read that things are expected to come to a head right before Thanksgiving, with most insiders expecting much larger flight cancellations and such....hopefully its just fearmongering.

My son visits his dad at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring break. We've had issues with flight schedules, disappearing routes, and cancellations every trip since last Thanksgiving.

In addition to his trip, I booked a short getaway for myself the three days before Thanksgiving.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I won't hold my breath.

Mine was just a renewal, but from when I dropped it off at the post office I got it back in about 3 weeks. Non-expedited.

And, I jinxed myself. United just cancelled our direct flights to/from Calgary and offered to rebook us on flights with stopovers in Denver. Flight times and layover lengths were terrible, so I rebooked on nonstop flights on WestJet via Delta for the same price. We get in to Calgary much later than originally planned, and then have to drive to Banff. This change eats up nearly a whole day of our trip.

Thankfully, United offered me a full refund of the purchase price back to my credit card. Didn't have to take a credit.

Now I've got to hold my breath that the WestJet flights don't get cancelled.

Our kids "renewal" but really new ones because kids can't renew only took 5 weeks total. Did not expedite. Used Texas A&M Study Abroad passport office and no complaints.

Update....

Two weeks to the date of starting the process, I have received 4 out of the 5 passports. Good thing I paid the expedited fee.
I was fully expecting this process to take up to the end of November/early December. I was totally caught off guard by how fast they were processed. In fact, from the passport tracking site, it said that our passports were approved and would begin being printed on the 10th and mailed out 2-3 days later. We received them 4 days before they were to be printed, so there's hope that the backlog is getting caught up now.

Bumping this based on a search. Any idea how long to get a passport right now. Kids 6 and 4 do not have one at all.

There is a thread towards the bottom of the page:

My nephew who is a minor submitted late February (non-expedited) and just received it. You should be fine.

We received my daughter's late-April after submitting April 10th (17 days) but it was expedited.
