My sister and I are flying in this summer and plan to visit the coasts of Oregon by Oceanside then drive up to Olympic NP. She wants to visit Portland for the day after flying in. I don't feel safe in doing that after hearing news and crimes rising in that area. What do you think?

Bring a helmet! Avoid these folks...

In short...Get out of Portland and drive East along the Columbia...

I don't know about safety in specific areas, but I wouldn't spend a dime in that ****hole on principal, alone.

We visited Portland in August and never saw anything "scary". The only way we knew of protests was a march of zoomers and hipsters drumming and chanting went by our hotel the first afternoon. Then I saw a tent set up of the same crowd selling BLM t shirts.

In short, if you want to go, don't let the fear mongering stop you.

Stay out of downtown and you will be fine. Most of trouble with Portland revolves around car break ins

lol it's fine. literally no more or less dangerous than any other big city. LA and NYC are 'worse' imo.

I don't think it's explicitly dangerous. But on our stay downtown we detoured around some homeless guy laid out on the street and police standing around him, some other dude just passed out on the sidewalk, a group of guys just hanging around a corner that just didn't give me a good vibe, some crazy guy early on in the morning wandering in the middle of the street screaming expletives, and some men and women sitting at a bar yelling at tourist looking people. Like me. Anyway, this was two years ago. I was significantly more on edge than I was in NYC, though I haven't been to NYC since the Bloomberg mayorship. We won't stay downtown ever again.

I would go downtown again for Powell's books, that's pretty cool. But they had to have an employee at the door just to turn the homeless back, who kept trying to get it. Never violent, they were intercepted and turned right around. But I saw them a couple times talking to someone, and I've never seen an employee with such an explict job as homeless control.

Note- Screaming Guy was out of our hotel window, so not threatened, just annoyed. We stayed at what is now the Royal Sonesta.

Skip Portland and head east into the Columbia River Gorge. Visit Multnomah Falls, drive the scenic route and see/hike to several other falls. I would go all the way to Hood River and stop at the Gorge White House for ciders/wine and views of Mt. Hood & Mount Adams.

Portland was cool in 2008 when I went but that was pre-anarcho communist culture. I was hit up from the most wealthy looking hobo I've ever seen. Dude was wearing nicer clothes than I was and asked me for $5 as I was coming out of a drug store.

My response: "$5!?!? I knew cost of living was high here, but I did not realize the cost of living here was so much higher than Texas."

He wasn't amused.

Heard from a few RE car break-ins. They went in for a quick sammich to eat and the windows were shattered, nothing stolen.

Heading up to PDX beginning of August to see some friends.

I live in Eugene and only had to Portland to go to the airport occasionally, but I haven't seen anything bad except for the ever-present homeless camps. Avoid downtown after dark and there really shouldn't be much to worry about.

You just described Austin. Sad what's happening here.

Portland is a great city. Don't let sensationalist infotainment influence your opinion before visiting.

Went to Oregon in 2019. Fantastic trip. Skip Portland. When in Oceanside eat at Roseannas. Fabulous restaurant!

Love Oregon, have spent time all over. Especially the Colombia river. The only place I didn't like was Portland, and not because of the lack of scenery...the entire region is beautiful. It's just that the people suck, and for me, that defines a place.

I intend to spend more time in Oregon now that I live in Idaho, but I won't waste another minute in that cesspool. And I certainly won't give them another cent of my money.

Oh, and hipsters suck. There, I said it. I hate hipsters so so much...

Yes, we would love to go back to Oregon, but Portland would just be a means to an end to get there. Don't need to go back to that cesspool. It's a beautiful state and we loved the wine country. The coast is pretty incredible with the Gilbatrar looking rocks right off the coast. And I would love to see the gorge.

We were in Portland in 2004. Even in 2004 I would not call it cool. My wife recently has reminded me that I kept saying Portland was very tolerant. There are good breweries and places to eat. Even in 2004 I was not a big fan. I liked Seattle much better.

Would not go to either one now. Nor San Francisco.

Me too. Those cities are all no go and I feel great about it.

IN 2004 we enjoyed Seattle and had plans to go back one day. Portland was another story as I did not particularly like it in 2004.

San Francisco has always been our favorite city in the US, but we will never go there again. Instead, we will fly into San Jose and drive down to Carmel. They will not put up with all this BS in Carmel.

Stupid take. Portland is as useless and forgettable as Canada in terms of their impact on the strength of the country. A bit amusing to laugh at at times, but in general, no one actually cares about what happens to them.

I use the ADT interactive crime map. it's really useful when traveling cross country and trying to figure out which areas to avoid when looking for a place to stay the night. According to this, Portland has a crime rate almost three times the national average, New York City? Just a little above average.

LOL, doing battle on equal terms with a group of neckbeards that escaped moms basement is a lot different than being assaulted in a restaurant with your family for refusing to "say her name" by that same group

From friends of mine that live there there is nothing to worry about. If not for the news they wouldn't know anything was even happening there. Apparently most everything had been focused in roughly one city block. Not even sure that's an issue these days. Not quite the apocalypse some folks might have you believe.
