Not sure where you live but lately on American from DFW (and presumably other large airlines from other large airports)- even on short notice you can get to direct destinations like Bozeman, Reno/Tahoe, Durango etc for $200s a pop Vs. $600-800.... point being-check flights to places that you'd normally write off as crazy expensive and you may be pleasantly surprised.

In our case though - Into Bozeman and back home from Missoula next week for low $200s a person !

It can be a little volatile I think but generally September is good...will be highs in 70s/80s and lows in 40s later this week

All that's while Colorado is having snow though so anything can happen. I figure scenario beats sweating in TX ha

I took my family to S Padre Island last October. It was fabulous. Beaches were mostly empty. No crowds. Glorious weather.

Might be a good time to try Yosemite.

Exuma Bahamas is incredible and they open back up Oct 15 - if you can fly

We did Yosemite in Oct and weather was fine - but can't do Half Dome with young kids

We drove from Houston to Northern Kentucky to the Ark encounter and creation museum for spring break and loved the drive and being there

Lots of options - good on you for reaching out to the boards - happy to answer more And share my itinerary if interested I have very detailed agenda built out by day

My wife and I just returned from a long weekend trip to Savannah, GA. Inexpensive and direct flight from IAH.

We stayed at the Marshall House; but I'm sure there are AirBNB type places available. Saw as many families as I did young partying types.

Someone else mentioned South Padre Island. Native Texan my whole life and I had never been South of Galveston prior to COVID and have been twice. We love it.

There is one all-inclusive resort and its in Florida called Club Med. It is NOT fancy but it is a lot of fun for the kids. They are sports focused, thus they always have lots of activities. It has a beach front - but it is more like a lake, it is brackish water. They have kayaks, paddle boards, sail boats and more. They have volleyball, basketball, pickle ball, mini-golf, flying trapeze, golf lessons, etc. It is all included (note regular golf is not). They have one main buffet restaurant (which is waiter service right now), a snack bar open during the day, and a nicer restaurant at night that requires reservations (I think it is adult only). Shockingly their buffet is really good and a nice variety. The rooms could def use some upgrades; some are nicer than others depending what section you are in. The family rooms are nice because its bedroom (no door), then bathroom, then a front bedroom that has twin beds. All the rooms are spacious. 3-4 pools, one is adults only. They have nightly entertainment (well some things may change because of COVID). Bar is bar brands only unless you pay extra.

Disney/Universal is a ghost town right now. Rides have 5-30 minute waits (most from what I am hearing in the 10-15 minute range). Prices are significantly going up next year thus it is a good time to go IF rides are your thing. The typical Disney magic isn't there due to masking, no characters, etc.

The JW Marriott in San Antonio is another good option if you want to stay close by. Lots of stuff to do in SA.

Boston/New England is awesome that time of year. We went last year. Took a ferry up to Salem the week of Halloween which was really cool. Tons to do and see if you like American revolution history like I do.
