I'm living in San Antonio and my little one desperately wants to build a snowman (Thanks Elsa!)
Where would be the most logical place to go, spend one night and then head back? Look at Feb 14th as a possible time to go. El Paso? Would somewhere in South NM have more reliable snow? I don't really want to go all the way to Angelfire. I'm assuming driving would be cheaper.

Besides finding a cheap flight to Denver or SLC, I think Ski Apache and Ruidoso is the closest place that would have guaranteed snow, and that is still a hike.

near Riudoso might be one of the closest resorts.

Going all the way to NM for one day would be a beat down. I'd wait until I could spend several days someplace like Red River NM.

But if you insist, I'd look into flying to Albuquerque. There is a ski area on Sandia Peak that is open only on weekends. You could drive up, or take the tram from ABQ.

Flights to Denver are usually pretty cheap. Yeah, more expensive than driving. But, personally, I'd rather fly to Denver and make a long weekend of it than just drive to NM for a night.

Denver.. guaranteed snow??? There have been 2 snow events since Thanksgiving in Denver. There isn't snow anywhere around here and it's 55 degrees all week.

But you can drive an hour west and be in the mountains with guaranteed snow.

Flights to Denver are usually more expensive during ski season (obviously...). Oftentimes it is easier to fly into Colorado Springs. It is a little longer of a drive to see snow, but sometimes worth it for the cheaper flights.

(I live in Denver)

One could reasonably assume that is a lot of traveling for one night, which was indicated by the OP.

I really don't mean to come off rude but I'd tell my kid .. we live in Texas. Once in a blue moon we will see snow.
But I ain't driving / flying that far for one day for you to build a snowman.
Maybe next year you can take a trip but I wouldn't even consider going that far or fly for a quick turnaround.

Once every two years. Enough to build a snowman every five.

Seriously, how old is this kid? Does the kid have special needs?
Is the kid stricken with some terminal illness?

Look, I'm the king of weekend trips but not even I would do this. Full disclosure, I spent 3 winters in Valdez, AK as a kid so I got my limit on shovelling snow.

I recommend telling Johnny that you're going to plan the best snow trip ever for winter 2020-2021. Let him help pick out where you go and how to get there - Summit County, CO, Park City, UT, or of course, my favourite, Alaska.

Now, if you're a baller and have some money to spend, take your kid to Queenstown, New Zealand n August.

You live in SATX for a reason, take Johhny to the Alamo, Fiesta Texas, or toobin' on the Frio, or Guadalupe. Then next winter, go big snow - Whittier to Valdez on a ferry, complete with a glacier and icebergs.

A good rule for us to follow is "dont be an *******." The OP asked where he could see snow. He didnt ask if you thought it was something you would do. He didn't ask for your parenting advise. Yet several have felt compelled to be the ******* of the thread.

Traveling to see natural phenomenon is not some insane thing. I drove my family 5000 miles last summer to see some geysers. Many traveled several years ago to see a solar eclipse. In South Texas, we dont get snow so going somewhere to see that isn't some crazy idea. In Corpus, people still talk about the snow of 2004 and three books and a song were written about it.

If the OP wants to make some memories with his kid over snow, that's his decision. He asked you where he could see snow, dont respond by being as ass and saying he needs to tell his kid to suck it up. We all do incredible things for our kids, taking them to see snow is no different.

This may help you see closest places to SA with snow. https://www.wunderground.com/maps/snow/snow-cover

To be honest, even I told OP that his plans sounded like a beat down, and suggested he at least do a few days...then I answered his question.

Hey, it's the Internet, someone is always going to give you (stuff). If you can't take it, don't show up.

We just took a quick trip to Keystone ( flew into Denver) and had a blast. Kids loved the kidtopia activities, Ice skating, tubing, building snowmen, playing in the snow, and the kidtopia snow fort. It was their first time to see snow as well, I'd recommend it for a quick 4 day trip.

Screw the haters OP. I grew up around SA and understand how special this would be for your kid, having not seen snow until I was almost a teen. A couple of years ago because of work, I flew to Hawaii for the weekend to be with my family during spring break and it was one of the most memorable trips I have made in 10 years. Just do the trip, your kid will remember it the rest of her life.

I grew up in Corpus Christi and also own one of those South Texas Miracle snow coffee table books. I was about 17 the first time I saw snow and I laughed like a maniac as I tried to assemble snowballs from the trace amounts I could scoop up outside a rest stop in Amarillo.

Snow is special to some people - particularly those in South Texas. Let him take the kid to see snow - it will be an unforgettable experience, no matter how silly it may seem.

I facetimed my 2 year old from Santa Fe this week and showed her the snow. She's now talking about wanting to see snow and building a snowman. I'm not going to drag a 2 year old up there for a weekend trip, but you better believe that I'm looking forward to that exact experience with her in a few years. It will be well worth the trouble in my opinion.

It will probably be unforgettable precisely because it's silly.

Can you tell me more about this. I need to fill the Humble ISD week off and this seems like a slam dunk.

I'd be curious what people's "silliest" trip ever was, especially those with a lot of FF miles that can do crazy trips without breaking the bank. Mine was probably a mileage run to Hong Kong 10 years ago when my body could endure 30 hours in coach. Looking back it was not worth it but was still crazy to travel half way around the world over the weekend.

My wife has to go there frequently for business. Are there any fun kid friendly snowparks if we don't want to ski? Probably go in March.

There are several places that have tubing. Not really sure what you mean by snow park.

Elm Creek in Maple Grove has a sweet tubing hill but not sure how late in the season it stays open
