Well I have to go to Saltillo this weekend for work and am flying into Monterrey. Anyone familiar with the route that could give some advice? How safe is it?

depending on where you are going most companies have a driver come pick you up. I have never driven myself but I recall basically jumping on a 2 lane highway and driving almost all the way to Saltillo. I never felt unsafe, but I wouldn't be walking around late at night in sketchy areas.

Well it is a plant a little ways out side Saltillo. When I asked the corporate guys they said they drove and no one knew of a driver. Planning on getting to MTY about 1 then drive to Saltillo hotel and meet at the plant ~8:30am Saturday so daylight the entire time.
I do appreciate everyone's advice on this.

call a nice hotel in Monterrey and get the concierge. Tell them you need a driver to Saltillo from the airport. They'll arrange for someone. Give them the flight date and details. I've done this multiple times to get drivers in Mex City.
Every nice hotel has a driver or two on standby.
edit - tip the driver after you get there!

I did that 12 years ago when drove McAllen-Reynosa-Monterrey-Saltillo-Zacatecas in one day (then on to Guanajuato, Guadalajara and Lake Chapala in the following days.

The drive itself is easy. Stick to daylight hours and you'll be fine.

I always hired a driver when I worked down there. I could get a driver for about 800 pesos per day. Anywhere I wanted to go no matter the distance. I'd have meetings or work in the office. I'd tell him to pick me up at 4 and could always count on him waiting in the parking lot at 3:40 smoking a cigarette. This was ten years ago though. He was in Monterey and I had his card for a while but there's no way I could find it now.

Thanks for all of the replies. The toll road from Monterrey to Saltillo is not to bad and I am not dead yet. I still have to make the drive to the plant and back to Saltillo as well as back to the airport.

I've driven it several times but it's been a decade. I don't remember ever feeling unsafe. You'll be fine.

This is not ten years ago. Current company has a big office in MTY. Our employees there used to drive into Texas for Christmas shopping. Now they won't make the drive from MTY because they say it is too dangerous. Also, my company has a driver we use to go from the airport to our office - he won't stop anywhere between. It's gotten bad.

Not bad at all. Scariest part was getting in and out of Monterrey and learning their style of driving, they kind of make up their own lanes.

I will drive again next time down.
