The wifey is taking me on a trip for my 35th and it is either Belize or Isla Mujeres. What say you TeAgs?

All inclusive is a must with easy beach access. We do not want to do an excursions this go round so that is not important.

If you're not doing excursions, I don't see the point in going to Belize IMO.

Wife and I are beach bums. We have been told that Belize has beautiful beaches so that's why it Is on the list.

I haven't been to Isla Mujeres but have been to other parts of Mexico and think the beaches are better than Belize. I was actually somewhat disappointed with Belize but I'm a diver and my disappointment was mainly at what I thought was overrated scuba diving.

Never been to Belize but Isla Mujeres is awesome. We spent a week there last summer and can't wait to go back. Beautiful beaches, great people, great food, and fantastic all around experience.

If you want more info I can go into details but I highly recommend Isla.

Good call on Belize. I've been and I love it, but if you're looking for beautiful beaches, Belize is not the answer.

We stayed at Privilege Aluxes and loved it. Hotel was nice but not lavish with pretty good food for AI. Beach cafe was the best with themed buffet for dinner. We didn't even try the Asian fusion place. Breakfast buffet was good. It was cheap enough that we didn't feel bad eating some our meals at some of the local spots. The beach and pool are top notch along with the location. It's close to downtown, the ferry, and Playa Norte. Overall it's a nice hotel that's not crazy fancy and expensive, but not too run and shabby. We thought it was perfect for us.

We rented a golf cart for the entire week so we could do some exploring on our own. We spent a day on Playa Norte and rented chairs at one of the beach clubs. We spent one day on the south end of the island at the Reef Park Garrafon where we snorkeled and relaxed under palapas. The AI option here is best ($60 US/person) since we drank all day and had access to lockers, pool, and lunch.

Overall the island is very laid back and safe. We even ventured out at night to a couple bars for beers and walks on the beach. We never felt unsafe or insecure. Everyone there was super nice and helpful. It's off the beaten path enough you don't get the big resort, touristy stuff and get to experience the local culture but close enough to reality you're not sleeping in a tent Naked and Afraid style. It's a good balance

We also spent one day on an excursion to the ruins at Chichen Itza. We booked this through Entertainment Plus. We did a private one and had our own driver for the day. We saw the ruins, stopped for lunch and a swim at a cenote, and he even stopped in a local village to show us around do some shopping at the local market. Highly recommend. It's a long day but well worth it.

Besides that we just stayed on the beach by the hotel and drank cold beer, ate at the beach cafe that's included in the AI, and hung out at the pool.

There are some great little places to eat on the island like Mango Cafe (Texan-owned breakfast joint with awesome food, local coffee, and fresh mimosas), Justicia Social (little fisherman's co-op on the water where local fisherman sell their day's catch and it's cooked fresh; best ceviche I've ever had), and we ate some place we saw that we just walked into that I can't remember the name but it looked out over the ocean and served Caribbean/Italian fusion type food.

For way more info check out the forums on TripAdvisor. We also ordered a MapChick map to help us navigate around the island.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Isla Mujeres. Parents own a condo there. Been going there for years and years. It's definitely getting busier by the year but still a fantastic place. Playa Norte is one of the best beaches in the world and the food on the island is fantastic which is a great plus compared to other places in Mexico.

As far as AI goes, I'm not sure there's many places that offer it. I know Privledge Aluxes does so that might be the best place for you. It's right on Playa Norte as well so there you go. Also a very short walk to downtown Hidalgo Street.

Rent a golf-cart and drive the island. Can get a cart for about $40/day. Beats taking cabs around.

Bars/ Restaurants to visit: Soggy Peso, Bahia Tortuga, Fenix, La Terraza, Barlitos, Isla 33.

Beach Clubs to visit: Zama Beach Club & Casa De Los Suenos. Both have great bars/pools to lounge around in open to the public.

Favorite Meals: Rolandis (Italian), Mango Cafe (Breakfast), Bally Hoo (Fish Tacos), Rubens (Anytime), Limon (Upscale Dinner - fantastic). If looking for an american fix then Barlitos will do the job for you. Jax is also across the street from you if you absolutely must have an american meal.

A lot of places will take a golf cart to get to or a cab ride. If you stay by the hotel/downtown area all trip that is fine but you will miss out on a ton of places that are located toward the south point of the island. My advice is to make sure and get around. The island is small but you will be surprised at how many places there are to go.

Love Isla!

Isla Mujeres Palace

Privilege Aluxes

Zoetry

Zoetry is probably the nicest hotel on the island. Palace is very nice as well. PA is a step below those two but you are central and downtown. Zoetry and Palace are towards the south end of the island so it depends what you are looking for.

The beach toward the south end of the island is not as great as playa norte. The resort and amenities will be nicer at Zoetry and Palace but the location and beach will be better at PA. From PA you can leave your hotel and walk everywhere downtown. From the other two you will have to cab it or cart it to downtown and back. Not a huge deal but just depends what you are looking for. If planning on spending tons of time in the room/resort then the nicer places might be better for you and you can just cab it/cart it to playa norte to use the beach.

Stayed at Zoetry in January. Absolutely loved it but their beach isn't the draw. Food there was awesome and the pools are beautiful. It's a 15 min cab ride to the north beach which is beautiful.

Overall the island is amazing and I'd go back. The restaurants at the Zoetry are worth it even if you don't stay there.

If beach is your main draw I'd go with PA.

It's steps away with lounge chairs, palapas, and a nice beach cafe. It's also a short walk around the corner to Playa Norte.

I want to go

But after having gone to the eastern slide of the Caribbean in March, I feel spoiled

Very intrigued though, I'm tired of going to Playa, Riviera Maya, Cancun......but such an easy trip so this looks very promising

Wifey flipped it...she booked the Hyatt Zilara.

I'd still recommend taking a day trip over to Isla if you feel like you want to get out and see something. The 15 min ferry ride over is beautiful and you can walk from the landing to Playa Norte.

Nice thread. I think I know where I will go next time the wife wants to visit Mexico.

Sher, do your parents rent their place or is it family/friends only?
