Got a lot of stuff planned but need a very nice (coat & tie type) restaurant for dinner; Staying at a Doubletree on Bayswater across from Hyde Park. Any suggestions? German- French- Steak House?

The Hawksmoor in Knightbridge serves some of the best steaks in London, and their Sunday Roast is amazing!

Monarch, I've not eaten there, but they have been around quite a while. I'd be surprised if you get out of there for $100 a person with wine. Might have to up your budget a little. Still, if its for the experience, a little splurge once in a while is fine

What can you suggest? Any good German restaurants?

Hmmm, I can't really help you out with German restaurants, sorry. I did take a quick look online and there are a few reviews, but mostly they don't seem to be full 'sit down' formal restaurants.
This is Austrian (similar cuisine I think) and gets very good reviews, and is also reasonably priced. http://www.kipferl.co.uk

It's near the Angel, Islington. right on Upper Street, which is a pretty trendy (and expensive) part of North London. Angel is on the Northern Line (the black line). There are some cool shops and boutiques along Upper Street, so not sure who you're going to be with, but it's not a bad little area to wander around. Also there are few good pubs and wine bars in that area. Might be worth a little adventure slightly further afield from where you're going to be based. It's not actually that far, you would be less than 30 mins I'd say on public transport.

Congrats on your trip. Why wait till the day before to ask about food. Kinda late, huh?

Please let us know what it's like or if you find any other gems.

We're heading back to Petrus when we go back to visit London this summer - Reservations booked (well in advance, I've learned my lesson from previously leaving things too late)!

I think it's the best fine dining foodie experience I've ever had.

Le Gavroche is legit. I also like The Rib Room in Knightsbridge (followed by a Cubano and drinks on their smoking lounge) and The Hawksmoor. Ate at Beast last time over, but it isn't suit and tie, yet you wouldn't feel out of place if you had one on. Guess that applies to all of London though. Beast got a bit loud due to the acoustics.

Totally not related to your original query, one of the coolest little joints I ate at a few weeks ago was a place called Bubbledogs on Charlotte Street. Hot dogs and champagne, I could do that night in and night out. Service was great but because it is so small we had to share a table with some random couple. Still, it didn't detract from the fun. Unfortunately I didn't get over to Jerusalem Tavern this time for some tasty beers, guess that will be next time.

Also kinda unlike me to know where I am going before I get there too. Kinda winging it. So far so good.
