Short Version - Week off between jobs, solo trip, unlimited budget (basically), 5 days max between 3/21/15 - 3/29/15, leaning towards beach/relaxation but open to other suggestions, depart from Houston, 29 years old, male, single.

Long Version - I work at a big law firm in Houston doing corporate/M&A/energy work in a super-stressful environment with crazy hours and I've just put in my 2 weeks notice at my current job and will have a week off before I start my new job at the end of March (will be doing the same basic work, just at a different firm). I'd really like to take at least 3 or 4 days (maybe 5) of that off-period to take a trip somewhere, but due to the timing and for a few other reasons I'll have to take the trip on my own. I've never traveled anywhere for pleasure on my own (travel around the U.S. all of the time for work on my own), so I'm having a difficult time deciding to where to go. Also, since it's probably relevant, I'm 29, single, and live in Houston (would be flying out of Houston).

I haven't taken a real vacation in 2 or 3 years, so I'd like to go somewhere relaxing and where I can sit on the beach, drink, get a tan, read a few books and re-charge my batteries before starting at the new firm. I've been leaning towards Mexico (Playa del Carmen or Playa Mujeres), Central America (maybe Belize?) or an island in the Caribbean and probably an all-inclusive resort if going that route. I've also thought about trying to stretch a trip out to somewhere in S. America (Rio, Colombia, Patagonia-area) or to Europe (Croatia, Southern Mediterranean coast of Spain), but I would have to find the absolute perfect flights so that I don't waste a bunch of daytime in the air. In the past I've been to Mexico 5 or 6 times, Grand Cayman, Key West and Jamaica and also studied abroad in Spain (Toledo), but the other spots would be new to me.

I really don't have any set budget that I'm trying to stay under for the trip, so I'm open to whatever suggestions you guys may have.

Thanks in advance for any locations/hotel/activity/flight/life advice or recommendations that you might have for me:

Just back from Chiloe Chili last week. Great place. Easy flight to Santiago, no jet lag. Easy driving and a a lot of travelers, like girls. Wine and food was great. Also easy to cross into Argentina.

I would agree on Argentina being a great spot for you to visit. Very European like mindset there and the girls are all gorgeous.

You only have a 9ish days. Fly to Cartagena Colombia. There are solid beaches nearby, great history and nightlife, and it is much better than just staying in an all inclusive. But, that is just the way I travel. If you want to meet people along the way, stay in a hostel but get your own room with only one (or two) beds (pay for both if two, it is cheap enough).

It will not be luxurious, but it is relaxing, and you get to meet a lot of other people.

BA and Rio are both great for local "scenery."

Direct flights in Brazil are dang hard if not impossible to find. It took us 12 hours to go from Manaus to Natal. Frustrating. Although Brazilian women are real catty and seemed to have issues with my wife. Very entertaining.

Bariloche is a fantastic but I wouldn't recommend it single. Go hit up a beach somewhere. Id recommend Asia but you'll spend too much time flying or recovering from jet lag

I know you said budget isn't an issue but something to think about if going to an all-inclusive ... a lot of those places, like cruises, are priced based on double occupancy so if you go solo you'll likely pay for 2 anyway.

Thanks, everyone, for all of the replies so far. Some good ideas on going to Chile, Buenos Aires and Cartagena that I hadn't really thought about yet. The hedonism resorts aren't really up my alley and that Amangiri resort looks awesome, but I'm a little worried about the temps being a little too cold there for what I'm looking for right now.

Anyone ever been to Punta del Este in Uruguay? I came across it while looking at BA and it looks pretty incredible.

Hedonism does not allow males that are not accompanied by females

Punta del Esta is cool but it somewhat like the Miami Beach of S. America. A lot of wealthy homes like Ralph Loren, the Bata family. Also you know Ken Lays sister has a vineyard there so if you see him say hi. Good thing is it gives you time to spend time in Argentina the take the Buquebus(ferry) to Montevideo. Dude go have a great time. Of course remember the Euro is almost 1to 1 with the dollar.

Costa Rica. You can find a good all-inclusive resort that will allow you all of the relaxation you need. Beaches and water are amazing, and you can be there in less time than it takes you to fly to New York.

I was in a similar situation a few years back and did a trip to Belize. Did the first part of the trip inland and the second part on Ambergris for some diving.

I travel a pretty good amount for work, mainly solo. Just got back from a work trip in Arraial Do Cabo, Brazil, really wish I had more time to check out a few more things but time was limited unfortunately. Beautiful beaches, fun little town.

Highly recommend Cartagena as well, been there quite a few times. Make sure to check out the "Old City".

If you are looking to stay in one spot, all inclusive's are the way to go, especially in the Caribbean and Central America.
