Short Version - Week off between jobs, solo trip, unlimited budget (basically), 5 days max between 3/21/15 - 3/29/15, leaning towards beach/relaxation but open to other suggestions, depart from Houston, 29 years old, male, single.
Long Version - I work at a big law firm in Houston doing corporate/M&A/energy work in a super-stressful environment with crazy hours and I've just put in my 2 weeks notice at my current job and will have a week off before I start my new job at the end of March (will be doing the same basic work, just at a different firm). I'd really like to take at least 3 or 4 days (maybe 5) of that off-period to take a trip somewhere, but due to the timing and for a few other reasons I'll have to take the trip on my own. I've never traveled anywhere for pleasure on my own (travel around the U.S. all of the time for work on my own), so I'm having a difficult time deciding to where to go. Also, since it's probably relevant, I'm 29, single, and live in Houston (would be flying out of Houston).
I haven't taken a real vacation in 2 or 3 years, so I'd like to go somewhere relaxing and where I can sit on the beach, drink, get a tan, read a few books and re-charge my batteries before starting at the new firm. I've been leaning towards Mexico (Playa del Carmen or Playa Mujeres), Central America (maybe Belize?) or an island in the Caribbean and probably an all-inclusive resort if going that route. I've also thought about trying to stretch a trip out to somewhere in S. America (Rio, Colombia, Patagonia-area) or to Europe (Croatia, Southern Mediterranean coast of Spain), but I would have to find the absolute perfect flights so that I don't waste a bunch of daytime in the air. In the past I've been to Mexico 5 or 6 times, Grand Cayman, Key West and Jamaica and also studied abroad in Spain (Toledo), but the other spots would be new to me.
I really don't have any set budget that I'm trying to stay under for the trip, so I'm open to whatever suggestions you guys may have.
Thanks in advance for any locations/hotel/activity/flight/life advice or recommendations that you might have for me:
