This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the Trinity atomic bomb test, the culmination of the Manhattan project. It lead directly to the weapon that was dropped on Nagasaki, and indirectly to the Hiroshima bomb. Whatever your feelings about the Bomb and the end of WWII, it charged the world forever.

The site is on the White Sands Missile Range, and is only open to the public twice a year. (See below)

To nerds like me, it is a fascinating place to visit. And since it is so remote, it takes some pre-planning to make the trip. That's why I am mentioning it now, and will be bumping the thread every few weeks until April. I've linked below the web page for the open house, and my trip report from October 2012. If you have any questions, please ask.

Bump for two reasons. One, it's four weeks until Open House. Second, a poster on the History Board pointed out that the WSMR web site has changed, adding an October open house.

In the past, the site was open the first Saturdays in April and October. When 'sequestration' hit, they cut it back to just once a year for several years. But it's now back to twice a year, so you have two chances this year, April 4th, 2015 and October 3rd, 2015.

I don't know if they found the money, there's extra interest because of the 70th Anniversary, or people complained because the first Saturday in April fell on Easter weekend this year. Good news in any case.

So if you were interested in the trip, but didn't want to travel Easter Weekend, good news. Plan for October.

They opened it up for the 60th anniversary in the summer of 2005. Are they not planning to do the same for the 70th?

It doesn't appear they are. All I can say is to check the WSMR web site or do a Google search this summer. And while it would be sort of special to be there on the anniversary day, early April and early October are much more pleasant times to be in the Jornada del Muerto than is July 16th.

I went in October when I was in 8th grade. I enjoyed it then and would probably enjoy it even more now. If anyone has a chance to go, I HIGHLY recommend doing so.
