This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the Trinity atomic bomb test, the culmination of the Manhattan project. It lead directly to the weapon that was dropped on Nagasaki, and indirectly to the Hiroshima bomb. Whatever your feelings about the Bomb and the end of WWII, it charged the world forever.
The site is on the White Sands Missile Range, and is only open to the public twice a year. (See below)
To nerds like me, it is a fascinating place to visit. And since it is so remote, it takes some pre-planning to make the trip. That's why I am mentioning it now, and will be bumping the thread every few weeks until April. I've linked below the web page for the open house, and my trip report from October 2012.
