Any recommendations for stops along the way? Have about 4 days to make the 22 hour drive.

Carlsbad and Roswell are two options.

Sledding at white sands is pretty fun

I used to go to El Paso for work often and I miss Julia's cafe carona on the west side. They have a great chicken broth soup that you add rice to. I really like their tapaqueno steak.

Caverns of Sonora

Ft. Davis (overnight at Indian Lodge)

Wouldn't bother with Roswell, but Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands are must sees

Elephant Butte reservoir is a big bird-watcher's attraction

It would be quite a diversion off your route, but the VLA is west of Socorro. You can go through San Antonio, NM and get a green chile cheeseburger at the Owl Bar. And if you are there the 1st Saturday in April, you can go to the Trinity site.

Airplane boneyard and museums at Davis-Monthan AFB

Agree with Canyon. I stopped in Roswell back in 2013 driving from Las Vegas, NV to Waco.

When we drove from Galveston to Mission Viejo in 1980, we stopped at:
  • The Alamo
  • Carlsbad Caverns
The drive through Southern Arizona was amazing.

The trip by itself to Hoover dam would be worth it!!!

Hoover Dam is awesome but... it would add at least 200 miles to an already long trip and you don't want to get anywhere near LA-Vegas traffic on a weekend if you can help it.

My personal record was 9 hours to go 284 miles from LA to Vegas on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving 2006. I made it a point to never do that again.

We took a side trip from the Grand Canyon to Hoover Dam before heading to our final destination at 29 Palms, CA. We were going to take the dam tour, but after waiting in line to buy the dam tour tickets, we were told that the dam elevator was broken so we couldn't take the dam tour. We didn't feel like paying the admission fee just to tour the dam visitor center so we just went to the dam gift shop and then went on our way.

For some reason I have this pic from driving across the top of the damn dam:

The new bypass bridge is pretty cool, but the side barriers are so high, you can't see jack squat while driving across it, but its a pretty good view if you park and walk across it.

For me, stopping in Scottsdale and playing a morning and afternoon round of golf would be a no brainer.

Stop at White Sands for a sunset nature stroll, it is gorgeous. Then go to Old Mesilla for dinner/sights and stay in Las Cruces, NM that evening.
