Heading to San Diego. Going to zoo. Any other must see places? Or great places to eat.

At a meeting in SD thus week. We ate at Blue Point in the gaslamp district last night. Super seafood. Good nightlife in the gaslamp.

I think that's the only must do. But lots of other great stuff.

  • If you're a golfer you have to at least visit, if not play, Torrey Pines
  • Choose one of the beaches, I tend to favor La Jolla or more up North or over to Coronado, but PB or OB work as well
  • If you're into beer there are tons of breweries. Green Flash, Ballast Point, Alesmith, Stone. Stone's restaurant is a bit of a trek but pretty awesome and they have one closer to the city now I think in Point Loma. You can do some tours where buses take you to various breweries as well
  • USS Midway
  • Gaslamp for drinking and food
  • If you really like animals the Zoo Safari Park is also worth it. Warmer and further than the zoo but more open. Hitting that then Stone would make for a good day

For food:
  • Juniper and Ivey in Little Italy - some famous chef, primarily small plates but have some full entrees. Get a reservation. Expensive but worth it.
  • Blue Point mentioned above is a good choice
  • Blue Water Seafood is an awesome place for lunch. Expect a long line or get there early. Fairly close to the airport
  • Not food, but there is a bar on top of the Marriott new Petco Park that is pretty cool to hang out at, great views of the city and Coronado Bridge
  • The Grant Grill has a great bar we eat at. Some of the best cocktails I've had and a great happy hour. Have a garden on the rooftop they use for a lot of their stuff
  • Neighborhood is a good casual place, a bit on the trendy side but good food at good prices. Near the Gaslamp

Go to George's in La Jolla for lunch or dinner and walk on down to seal beach below it to check out the seals.

We've stayed at the Del a couple times and if you like old historic buildings, it's a cool one to see. The restaraunts there are also pretty good but be prepared to pay for "resort" prices. The beach is also nice behind the del and if you're lucky, you may see some Navy seals training along the beach as well.

Balboa Park is a great stop. Beautiful buildings and grounds all over that place. I always love visiting Hotel Del for a couple of drinks and just to see the classic hotel. Drinks at La Puerta in Gas Lamp are great. Little Italy for dinner is nice. Wife and I went to Buon Appetito and it was fantastic. A cheap kind of neat thing to do with my son was buying a ticket for the Star of India tour which is actually for 5 or 6 different boats. The coolest was the Soviet sub that we got to run around. God only knows how they lived in that thing underwater. Old Town area for lunch is always good. Have fun!

We're heading out there next week so this thread was useful for me. Thanks.

George's is a good one I forgot. I prefer the top level (they have a bar level, fine dining level and rooftop) if the weather is nice.

Can't believe I didn't mention either Old Town or Balboa Park. Old Town is great, go for lunch or brunch, great Mexican (not Tex Mex).

Balboa Park has like 15 museums, may be worth choosing a couple to hit. They can be pretty neat.

Check out the retired Americas Cup sailing yacht that offers rides in the bay... we found it via tripadvisor last year and had a fantastic time.

Any suggestions for little ones? We're going to have our 4-year old son with us when we go to San Diego. I'm trying to talk my husband into going to the zoo...is it doable in one day? We'll be visiting family at Coronado, so definitely going to USS Midway.

We're flying in Saturday and will get there early afternoon, then all day Sunday, and leave around lunch on Monday to head to Anaheim for a week at Disneyland.

Can definitely do the zoo in a day. My daughter is 4 and loves the zoo.

I enjoyed Point Loma quite a lot. Your kiddo might like going down to the tide pools. He'll get a kick out of the seals if you go to the cove at La Jolla.

We're actually looking at doing a whale watching cruise...it's 3-hours and there's a groupon for it where it would be $60.

I did a whale watching tour in San Diego and was bored to death (and I love sea life). Maybe it was just bad luck, but it was nothing more than 3 hours of seeing the same humpback sticking it's tail out of the water.

We've done dinner cruises a couple times within the bay. They leave from the dock close to the Midway and take you up and down the bay. They cruise down past the Coronado bridge and back up to the submarine base by point Loma. Cool tour if you like seeing all the naval ships.
