How long do you want to ignore this user?
the wife and kids and I are making a somewhat impromptu trip over memorial day weekend to the Red River/Angel Fire area. My family used to go to Red River nearly every summer but we would ski Angel Fire in the winter (duh).

I think there are more things to do in Red River in the summer but it appears that there is a motorcycle convention (expecting 20k riders) over memorial day weekend so we were gong to reroute to Angel Fire.

Is there enough to do in Angel Fire during the spring/summer? we like to do outdoorsy things but with a 6 month old we are somewhat limited on what we can do and for how long but we will have both of the kids in hiking backpacks. We also like to bop around town and do all the "local" things?

thanks for any advice.

Yeah there's really not much in the Angel Fire / Eagles Nest area.

Taos would probably be a better trip.

Thanks guys. I had given Taos some thought but since I had never been there and it is going to be somewhat of a whirlwind trip I was just thinking we would stick to the familiar spots but it looks like I will have to do some research on Taos.

Thanks. Keep the suggestions coming. They are much appreciated.

Been to Taos and AF. I'd lean towards AF. For whatever reason I just liked the town better. Never been to RR.

Strange. My brother lives in AF and goes to Taos for EVERYTHING.

If this thread lives there is an Aggie owned 3 story cabin for rent about half mile behind the AF grocery store. Great place, we stay there often. I know AF isn't the best but it's very nice for the price and Taos is a scenic half day trip.

My brother and his wife and kids actually just got back from angel fire. Seems they had a good time there.

I know it's past Memorial Day, but we're headed to Red River next week. We go almost every summer or fall. Love the hiking and camping and I love shopping in the town. They have the best Christmas ornament store I've ever seen :-)

For those who have been to Red River, do you have any lodging recommendation (or anywhere to stay away from)?

Haven't been there recently enough for a personal opinion, but I've always had good luck with Trip Advisor

Seems like some Ags own one of the RR hotels, but I can't remember which one.

Aggies used to own the Alpine Lodge. I don't know if they still do. We used to take our kids skiing there & we loved it. As for lodging-it is mostly older but some places have been pretty well maintained. Just don't have high expectations. Last time we were there we stayed at the Copper King Lodge in one of the units on the river. Also the Riverside Lodge in their riverfront units. Those 2 were my favs of all the places we have stayed.

I don't mind rustic/old, but I do want somewhere that is clean. I'll check TripAdvisor, but was hoping that someone had first hand knowledge.

Copper King & Riverside were both very clean. The folks at Copper King are a little bit more friendly than Riverside. I wouldn't call either of these very rustic just older. Not 5 star but you really won't find that in RR unless you rent a big expensive house.

Thanks Ag Mom! There's just two of us, so no need for a big house. (Although I have looked at some and they a gorgeous!)

Is there any ski in ski out at either place?

Both of those lodges are close to each other. The Copper Chair lift is right there but I would confirm that it is still operational.

I should have been more clear... Does RR or AF have ski in ski out? Any other resorts in NM with ski in ski out?

RR & AF have ski in/out. Just depends if those places would meet your wants/needs. RR is very small. Basically there is a main street that runs thru the length of town w/lodging etc on both sides of the road. They also have a free shuttle bus that picks you up at the ski area & will drop you back at your hotel/condo/lodge.

Go to Taos, much more to do there than in Angel Fire.
