My wife has an opportunity to go down there for a month or so this summer for some contract work but neither of us know anything about Columbia. All I that comes to mind to me is drug lords. Is it safe down there?

Yes. I felt safe - only issue I had wa at 3 am outside a bar in a bad neighborhood by myself. Could have happened anywhere. Here is my trip review on it:

Bogota I'm assuming? If so, there are some really nice areas and the weather is great. There Is also a good brewpub chain there.

Yes, British Columbia is quite safe with mostly friendly Cannucks.

Loved Colombia but to be in a big city you just have to watch your back. Only had one camera stolen. I would go back.

Colombia is like any other country...there are good and bad places. I've been there several times (Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena, Cali). It's a nice country with friendly people who like Americans. I'm sure her contacts down there will take care of her. Which city is the work at?

I've been to Bogota, Cartagena, and Medellin. I love Colombia. The Bogota ladies are beautiful, too.

I agree with the comments above regarding every large city having its good and bad parts. What I would avoid, however, is the roads that connect the large cities. If you need to go from Cali to Medellin, or from Bogota to Cartagena, etc, take a plane. Don't drive it. The roads are dangerous!

I took a night bus from Medellin to Cartagena. I am somewhat happy a slept through most of it.

When traveling in Bogota, DO NOT take a CAB from the street; make sure and have the hotel or restaurant call one for you. I have had a few friends go on a "Million Dollar Cab Ride" lately.
