Took a 5 day(3 ski days) trip to Wolf Creek from the 26th-31st.

Cost wise it's unbeatable. Per day it was cheaper for me to sleep, rent demos, and ski than it was for a single lift ticket at Vail.

I've skied Vail, WP, Keystone, Copper, A Basin, Steamboat, and Breck in CO. Outside of Vail, I prefer Wolf Creek. Snow conditions are nearly unbeatable, and the mountain has great terrain.

The amenities are the only knock on the place. Wolf Creek had two straight record days when I was there, and their lodges are not meant to handle anything over 4,000 people. Long waits for food, and seating. Assumption was that due to the chitty conditions in NM, everyone headed N to Wolf Creek.

This however did not translate to lift lines. Longest lift line on Alberta was 45 seconds. Even after 3-4 days without new snow, you could still make new tracks in the glade runs and waterfall chutes.

Final ski day was a powder day, and it was even better.

It's not very snowboard friendly(Praise God), so unless you are incredibly comfortable going full tilt through trees you are nearly guaranteed a catwalk hike.

Unless I know I'm getting at least 20 ski days in a year I don't do any hiking. If you are more inclined to hike, then Wolf Creek has even more to offer.

Overall I was very impressed with the trip. Drive up took around 13.5 hours. We were stuck in a blizzard in NM on the way home that increased the drive to 16 hours.

1) When the conditions are right, Wolf Creek has the best snow in Colorado. When they are wrong, it often has the ONLY snow in Colorado.

2) What route did you take?

Going to Wolf Creek in March this year, does it get a big spring break crowd like Summitt county does?

Canyon,

On the way up we took I-40 to Clines' Corner and took the straight shot up 285 to Pagosa.

Your warnings about I-40 were unfortunately realized as I-40 East was shutdown due to the terrible conditions on our way home.

Our only route then was to continue South on 285 through Roswell.

Craziest thing happened on our drive to Roswell. A snow plow raced by us going S about 65mi N of Roswell, and then took a turnaround back N a few miles later. We drive 400 yards past the turnaround, and watched the road go COMPLETELY dry. No residual snow, no ice patches, anything. Crazy aliens.

Skied there three or four years back during the first week of january. same type of thing, the longest line to wait for a lift was 4 people deep. It was great. We had rented a condo in town so it was a 20-30 minute drive getting out there, but it was worth it.

Sounds like Wolf Creek may be worth checking out. My grandpa has a hunting cabin in Pagosa Springs, so I'd like to ski there a day or two in March.

Just got back from an off-peak (mid January) trip to pagosa springs/ wolf creek. I have skied most of Colorado and the snow conditions in WC are easily the most reliable to plan a trip around. Loved the town too. I recommend Pagosa Brewing Company for delicious pizza and micro brews (and for $10 you can bring in any mug which they will hold for you and serve beer in for the week!). Kips downtown has a great atmosphere, very laid back and good food. The Pilewski is a pulled pork enchilada smothered in green chili queso and fresh avocados....mmmmmmm.... The Springs are a nice family destination with about 20 pools of varying temperature, and if your as crazy as the Holmviks you can jump in the semi-frozen San Juan River nearby.
