Los Angeles' high payment point is $100.95 million in both 2038 and '39, according to details obtained by The Associated Press.

The commish and the players have no problem with this.

Kicking the can down the road just to circumvent the system?

It doesn't circumvent the system, they are required to put the money in escrow.

The players are just essentially agreeing to a fixed interest rate return by deferring their paychecks. As an added bonus, Ohtani might be able to dodge around 28 million in state income tax as well with the deferments.

Ohtani really signed a 10 year 460 million dollar contract, but he agreed to have 400+ million set in escrow so that by the time it's all paid out he nets 700 million. It's just a guaranteed return for the player, and at a rate that's pretty reasonable for both parties. I get that most people can't even balance their own checking accounts, but the stupid narrative around the deferred payments is just next level ignorant.

Most guys don't ask for the deferments because they want their money up front and the ability to invest it themselves or spend it frivolously themselves.
