Saw a story on Chron.com about Astros third basemen as it talked about them in regards to Bregman perhaps being done here (sad trombone) but it mentioned a former Astro who I always remembered as pretty mediocre or maybe less, Morgan Ensberg.

I went and looked at this stats and while his career was relatively short he's got a career OPS of .830 and OPS+ of 113. Bregman's numbers are .848 and 132, respectively. The major difference is Bregman's dWAR is 36.5 while Ensberg's is 12.1.

I was shocked that their offensive numbers were anywhere near that close.

So is Ensberg underrated or more overlooked because of the time frame he played for the Astros where he was overshadowed by the Killer B's?

I feel like he had one MONSTER year and a couple solid seasons and then his career was over

Had a couple good seasons in 03 and 04, big year in 05, good season in 06, out of league by 08.

Ensberg flamed out pretty quickly. He had an injury that he tried to play through that affected his swing and he never put it back together after that.

Unreal starting pitching:
Oswalt 20-12, 2.94
Pettitte 17-9, .239
Clemens 13-8, 1.97

Phenomenal closer:
Lidge: 4-4, 2.29 ERA, 42 saves, 13.1 K / 9 IP

WTF Offense:
Ensberg career year: 36 HR, 101 RBi, .945 OPS

Jason Lane career year: 26 HR, 78 RBi, .815 OPS

Berkman falls off across the board but still very good - only 24 HR and 82 RBi after 30 and 106 the year before

39-year-old Biggio turns into late-career Paul Molitor hitting home runs (26, a career high)

Jeff Bagwell declared legally dead, plays 39 games, hits 3 home runs.

Four starters: Brad Ausmus, Adam Everett, Willy Taveras, and Chris Burke have a combined 1,997 at-bats and combine to hit 22 home runs, with frigging Everett hitting half of them.

Team famously starts 15-30, wins 28 of next 41 to reach 500 at 43-43, finishes year on 74-43 romp.
