I've only been listening, but it sounds like he slid into the catchers shin guard first, then had to go down to tap the plate. Ford/sparks said it's not blocking because the plate was clear he just slid high (at least that's how I remember it explained)

Catcher's knee was blocking the plate. Yordans foot hit the knee on the slide just as the tag was applied.

Once the defender has the ball, he can block the plate.

Right call on a bang bang play.
