I googled the phrase "worst contracts in sports." Funny enough, the first article that comes up leads with a picture of Davis.

Looked him up to see if he even played last year, apparently so. Only got 52 at bats and managed 6 hits and 1 RBI. Due to the shortened season he only made $6.29 million. For the next two seasons he will make a base salary of $17 million. After that, he will make a total of $42 million spread out from 2023 to 2037.

I struggled to think of a worse investment. As it turns out, the link above shows he may not even be in the Top 5 current worst deals.

He's sitting at 295 home runs. He's under contract for two more seasons. I wonder if he will get to 300.

Players and former players on MLB Network love to whine about owners holding back on spending. This guy's contract is Exhibit A for going with younger, hungrier players.

Under today's terms and money it doesn't appear like a lot of money but in 1985 the Braves signed Bruce Sutter to 6 year contract to be their closer. Sutter only lasted 4 more seasons and they were very injury riddled at that. What separates this contract is the Braves agreed to pay him no less than $1.12 million per year, and potentially more if interest rates spiked above a negotiated floor of 12.3 percent for 30 years after his retirement. He retired in 1989 but still got paid his regular salary for 90 and 91, so the 30 years kicked in a year after his last contract year. and it ends ends in 2021, so Bruce Sutter, at some point this year, received or will receive a check for $1.12 million."

Not a bad deal at all for the Mets.

Miguel Cabrera's contract is beyond awful.

$30 MM due in 2021
$32 MM due in 2022
$32 MM due in 2023

all guaranteed.

he was a negative WAR player in 2017 and 2019 while making $30 MM each year.

his combined WAR for the last 4 years is -0.4...while banking $120 MM

I recall reading that he was no longer able to use his waiver to be able to use Ritalin (or something like it), and that it coincided with his downfall.

Except that the guaranteed 8% return came from Bernie Madoff.

Signs of being a bit of a nervous headcase were there when he was a Ranger. He was a hometown kid (Longview HS, Navarro JC) that would rake at AAA and initially raked when brought up. But then he started struggling. Then over the course of the next 3 years or so, he'd end up down in AAA and would rake, but then when he'd get brought up, he'd perform even worse than the last time he was up.

An eventual change of scenery to Baltimore + Adderall seemed to do the trick for a while. But then he lost his Adderall exemption and he went back to headcase territory.

If they wanted him for ages 33-35 then they had to pay for ages 36-43.

Pujols and Cabrera owe a lot to the steroid era for their contracts. That era made GM/owners believe players can be expected to be productive into their late 30s despite it not being the case historically outside of a few rare exceptions.

I have a feeling the Bryce Harper contract is going to be one of the all time worst.

Insurance covered half of Fielder's (and Detroit was already funding part), so his was bad but not as terrible as some of these $25-30 million a year deals. The Rangers paid him for the 3 years he played, then they were out were out $8 mill per year for the next 4 he didn't. And I guess Covid would have knocked that 4th year down to about $3

Justin Upton's contract with the Tigers/Angels is another active horrendous one.

7 years for $150 MM

to date he has produced a 10.2 WAR with 2 years to go.

was a negative WAR player in 2019 and 2020
