Grew up listening to Elston and even after all his years in the booth did I come to think of Milo as the 'Stros play-by play man.

Smooth. Loved his style. Not a rah rah guy but easy to listen to over a 162 game schedule.

Classy guy, listened to him every night growing up in the 60s, can still hear his voice.

I seem to remember him as Dizzy Dean's partner on Game of the Day on radio.

Pretty rough week for the Good Guys.

I'm sure Milo is up there talking to the big man and putting in a good word for us.

Do not mention huckster Milo in the same thread as Gene. He and Elston never got along, because Gene was more interested in broadcasting the games to the Astro followers, rather than hyping every hit and trying to sell every ticket imaginable.

Grew up listening to Gene & Loel Passe on an old transistor radio back in the early-mid 70's. Sometimes, I'd go and listen to them or a Cardinals game on the back porch of my elderly neighbors home during the summer. He was a cardinal fan, but also tuned in to Astros games every so often.

Astros were generally about a .500 club back then, but I'll always have fond memories of them, thanks to these 2 guys......

Gene Elston was absolutely, without a doubt, the Number 1 best play-by-play announcer in sports. There is not a close 2nd. The listener was always in the game. He frequently gave the big picture of the game, and you could tune in to the Astros broadcast at any time during the game and within moments the listener knew the complete game situation. An amazing announcer.

Gene Elston was one of the greats. Everytime I heard his voice I was instantly transported back to the 60's, listening to the Astros on my little transistor radio. One of the smoothest voices ever to grace the airwaves. A major crime when he was fired by John McMullen back in the 80's and replaced by Milo.

RIP.
