Poor White Sox. The Mets area is a lot bigger than I thought it would be though.

No way the White Sox area is that big.

Now that I look at it again, the Marlins... oof.

I don't see any territory going for the Mets

Can anyone tell what team is splitting Utah with the Yankees... I must be blind, because I don't see that pinkish color in the legend

I don't know Kyle. I don't see that salmon color on the legend either.

I wonder what the Texas map would have looked like 10 years ago.

A hell of a lot different.

Poor Mets though. They literally have nothing.

Here you go. Better, big map:

That's actually the Red Sox splitting Utah. And I don't think the Mets have any counties except maybe that one county in Virginia?

I was thinking the Virginia blip is for the Orioles

Astros with the Sliver.

Actually, on the big map in the second link, that blip in Virginia is for Boston. The other team completely missing from the map besides the Mets is Oakland.

Similar map was done for college football.

I would have guessed that the Cardinals would have had a bigger sprawl into the midwest and southeast. I suppose 30 years ago St. Louis did before the Braves starting winning and the Rockies existed

ChiCubs fandom extends all the way into Kansas and west as far as northwest Wyoming. Nobody in the Dakotas even knows Minnetonka has a baseball team

So, the A's have no fanbase?
ChipFTAC01

They have no county where they are the dominant fanbase. Even in Alameda County the Giants are the #1 team.

I live in the bay area, and I have met very few fans of the Oakland teams (Raiders or Athletics). Their stadium is bad and the 49er's and Giants have done so much better recently, it's easy to switch to the better team at the time. Especially when you don't have to go against the other team very often when they are in separate leagues/conferences.

Cardinals used to be the team in OK also. I remember seeing an article about tv coverage and fan support by team about 8-10 years ago, the point was that tv coverage helped to drive fan support. The survey was similar to the Soda vs Coke vs Pop type of survey (where do you live, where did you grow up, where do you consider yourself from, and who is your favorite team?). OK was definitely for St Louis. Astros had more of Texas than this map shows, but the Rangers still had West Texas. Braves and Cubs were all over, the article discussed TBS and WGN coverage building a huge fanbase for years nationwide outside of other teams' cities, but wider coverage more recently (at the time) was eating into those fanbases
