Did DeAndre effectively kill the Moratorium period going forward?

I think he single handedly did.

How? Do you think teams are not going to negotiate during that time frame now?

Isn't this exactly what the moratorium is for?

He's not the first one that's done this.

Cuban was the one that got slighted, don't dismiss that.

This was also the highest profile incidence by far. Don't give me that Boozer story as an example. Handled very differently by all parties. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1848196

I'm not a mavs fan.

Try again.

Just irked by DeAndre's actions as a Spurs and NBA fan.

I think they'll be allowed to ink deals much sooner. There may still be a couple of days, but I think you'll see it shrink considerably if not disappear entirely.

Given the entanglements of dealing with an NBA salary cap and how so many deals are contingent upon others, having a moratorium like this is incredibly foolish. It's begging for organizations and players to be hung out to dry. The only saving grace has been that almost all of the participants have been standup enough to keep that from happening.

And what exactly was gained here? A player had these same exact offers sitting on the table when he made his first decision last week. It wasn't like new deals arose. The only thing gained was an organization got ****ed over, and the same thing could happen to a player.

I'm sure it'll be brought up in the next CBA. Next year and the year after the moratorium is actually longer.

I didn't say anything was gained. Just pointing out that the moratorium is designed so players can change their mind, exactly like DeAndre did.

I appreciate the civil dialog in this thread.

I would say that under ideal circumstances, the moratorium exists so players can make a well informed, thoughtful, and conclusive decision the first time.

What was violated here wasn't time...It was trust. Lots of players made commitments during the moratorium, yet DeAndre is the only one who broke his commitment. The consequences of his decision have no effect on him, but massive effects for a franchise that had moved forward based on his word, which was presumed to be trustworthy.

The biggest reason the moratorium exists is so the league can sort out what the salary cap is going to be. Considering how bad the last lockout was and how acrimonious the BRI talks were, I can't imagine the NBAPA is willing to just let the league decide it wants to estimate the cap differently or use anything but the hard, end-of-year-figures that result with the league ending their fiscal year on June 30.

Right, but it's also a ridiculous reason. Just postpone FA overall for 7 days if knowing the exact cap # is so critical that you can't allow deals to be inked. Once you let the sides meet and negotiate, deals are going to get done anyway.

Good point, I think there's also the murky area of tampering involved too. So many stories (kinda washed away under the tide of DJ back to Clippers stories) on how Fegan and Cuban are bros, how Mavs have been reaching out all year through various players/backchannels, etc. Cuban was just fined a few days ago ($25K) for Jordan comments.

I find it interesting that the NFL and NBA have opposite orders for the draft and free agency period, and for the NBA, I'm not sure which is better, but given the nature of the league, I understand why the NFL does free agency first, than the draft, while NBA goes draft than free agency.

Here's the deal:

- contracts end with the league fiscal year - June 30
- Once the fiscal year ends, the league needs a week or so to pencil-whip the final cap #.
- In years past, they postponed the FA talks and signing until the cap # was finalized
- However, once players weren't under contract (July 1), agents and teams were still talking/negotiating in that waiting period even though they weren't supposed to
- So the NBA acknowledged that these discussions were happening anyway and set up a moratorium - you can talk but can't formally sign until the cap pencil-whipping is done

So in no way is it intended to be a time period that just allows players to change their mind.

They need to find a way to come up with a better cap # by July 1 and just let players start signing, or postpone all negotiations and signings until the cap is finalized and put stiff penalties in for violating it.

Back channel negotiations are already occurring prior to July 1. Simple solution is to just allow teams to meet with FA's after the accounting is done and the cap is set. Sure back channel negotiations will still occur but who cares. That's already happening prior to July 1.

The problem with NBA team building is that player moves are not made independent of one another. The Mavs "tied up" 20M in cap space for 5 days to a ghost. They are now at a competitive disadvantage and a simple rule change could fix it. The whole system was a house of cards. It's just that no one has ever been burned this badly before so there was no impetus to change.

No problem with DeAndre changing his mind. Aside from the fact that is was chicken**** that he didn't have the guts to tell the the Mavs. Just text Cuban some palm tree emojis with a sad face and be done with it.

Correct, especially the part about it not being intended to be a time period that allows players to change mind.

What I don't know is what the insurance and workout situation is for players on expiring contracts, and what role that plays.

I could completely understand why a player would want to sign a contract as soon as his contract expires on 6/30th.

I also understand why they need to know the cap numbers before negotiations begin.
