For those that feel like chatting during the draft.

Who's on your wishlist for your squad tonight? Seems like it could be a crazy night with a lot of movement.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I want Marc Gasol. So I'm hoping the Spurs either move way up the draft, draft and stash a euro stiff, or trade out of the first round. Picking someone at 26 for immediate contribution (which is what they need) is a fools errand.

If the Spurs want Gasol they are going to have to trade some of their current assets (Splitter or Diaw). If they are looking to be players in free agency than them trading the pick altogether makes some sense but they could still elect to sign a big name FA like Gasol or Aldridge and still take a player in the draft.

I think it's pretty obvious the Spurs are being very active and have set up many difference scenarios for themselves.

Aldridge has reportedly told Portland he's not staying. If this is true and he genuinely has named the Spurs as the team he's most interested in; I don't see why Portland and SA don't do a S&T with him and Splitter. Portland at least gets a solid center in return for him leaving and Aldridge is able to get the most money this way. It makes sense for both sides.

Unfortunately if this is the route both franchises are looking at going then the earliest they will be able to make this deal will be July 10th which means another two weeks of speculation.

Aldridge gets the same contract in a sign and trade as he would as a regular free agent.

Unless they have a better deal in place for getting rid of Splitter.

Can't he get an extra year through a S&T?

Not anymore

It's the same limitations as if the player signed outright with the new team.

Are you sure? Pretty sure the current team gets an advantage to resign the free agent, adding on another year on the max contract.

You are right about the years. It would be the same amount of years which I didn't realize. Still would be a slight increase in pay though if I am not mistaken. Wouldn't play as big a factor as I was thinking.

Not when using a sign and trade.

Yes when keeping the player.

The sign-and-trade is attractive to a free agent because he can join a team that otherwise would not have the cap space to sign him. Prior to the new CBA, a player could earn more money through a sign-and-trade. By re-signing with Bird rights with his old team and then forcing the trade, the player was able to get the hometown money and find a new location at the same time.

This is no longer an option. The length and annual raises are limited to four years and 4.5%, respectively, just as they are for free agent contracts when a player signs with a new team.

Surely Philly doesn't go Okafor. I think they will trade this him if they do.

If they do take someone for themselves I would guess Mudiay..?

Good find, thanks. I knew sign and trade was best.

I don't want the Spurs to pick up Aldridge. They'll have to give up too much depth and he's not good enough on defense. I'd rather see them grab one of these mobile shotblocking PFs that are projected in the late first/early second, then basically bring everyone back. I want a starting 4 who can switch onto 3 and 5, our primary lineups are a little slow footed for the way the game is going.

I lol'd at that when I saw it. I also found it kind of funny how Jay Williams said the Knicks are in a long rebuild and yet he thought they should have drafted a turn-key, less upside player. Makes no sense to me.
