Like Shannon Doherty leaving 90210 and ML Carr blah, blah, blah Celtic reference, ESPN announced that they are not renewing his contract. Grantland stays with ESPN, without him as a writer, which is like my buddy Ben in the 9th grade starting a lemonade stand, letting others run it, and then when he gets drunk some night it gets taken from him. The Sports Girl thinks this is like when Isiah Thomas, Daryl Morey, and our buddy Skipper sauntered into Lemmie's on 42nd St and having crab cakes ordered, but now Rowdy Roddy Piper walks in, and you can't not give the starter of Piper's Pit a crab cake can you? *

*Interesting story of meeting Rowdy Roddy Piper on the set of They Live here.

More Zach Lowe and less Jalen Rose. That's what will keep me interested in Grantland.

Also Bill Barnwell and Jonah Keri are my favorite writers for NFL and MLB stuff respectively.

Pascal,

You're like my father's friend Sal when it comes to following the rules. You have to do something Bill Simmons-like in this thread. That means it can't come in with two short sentences that were like Jericho and Pushing Daisies that were two year wonders from television and disappeared.* You have to be like Red Sox great Bobby Doerr and go long.** I can't say this strongly enough, if 7 words is good, 77 words is better.

*I always thought the Skeet Ulrich character played too close to being a Matt Damon-Ben Affleck cross.

**My grandfather saw Doerr hit two home runs on the day my father was born. My grandfather can't tell me when dad was born, but he knows who was on base when Doerr hit the game-winner.

ESPN getting rid of the only person who's brought them original/interesting content in the past decade with Grantland and the 30 for 30 series. All because he won't tow the party line.

Obviously ESPN will keep viewership, but I sincerely hope that Simmons catches on at a rival and poaches the good Grantland writers (Bill Barnwell and Zach Lowe for my tastes).

Where am I supposed to turn to now for coverage of every single Boston Celtic play of the last 30 years?

2015 Simmons, I can take or leave. But it has been impressive to see his rise from superstar blogger to one of the most powerful individuals in sports media.

I sometimes like Simmons but all his friends are pretty crap and are too prevalent on Grantland.

Still, interesting decision by espn.

Simmons found out he was not getting a new contract from Twitter.

Because ESPN.

You think CBS, Fox, TNT aren't going to back up a dump truck of cash to his front door in the next 48 hours?

I think he ends up at Fox. I hope he doesn't go the Turner/Bleacher Report route.

If the rumors are true that he singlehandedly drives 80% of Grantlands traffic via his podcast and articles, he's not going to work for anyone... He'll start an independent site similar to Grantland.

Sounds like Simmons crossed the NFL one too many times. Love this .gif from the comments on that Deadspin article:

On a side note, any chance we can fulfill his childhood dream and get him hired as the Dallas Mavericks VP of Common Sense? Seems like the type of publicity stunt that's right up Mark Cuban's alley.

Jesus Christ, Iowa, you had me cracking up.

It's hard for me to believe that ESPN finally got tired enough of Simmons to fire him. Here are the eighteen most relevant Shawshank quotes my buddies and I could think of while simultaneously placing prop bets on the Grizzlies-Warriors game (if gambling were legal)*.

*I'm giving up now. Not clever or committed enough to follow through with the next thousand words.

I'm ok with this. Simmons sucks on tv. He's great as an historian of the game, but he's not very good in real time. The written word gives him time to 1) understand how things fit in historical context, 2) realize that not every 9 and 5 performance from the 3rd guy off the bench needs to be talked about in relation to Tommy Heinsohn's run in '63, and 3) polish the arguments that do turn out to be valid. Plus I can skip all the references to shows I've never seen when they are in text.

I like Bill most via article, and then his podcast, where he has clearly prepared ahead of time and it's not "live".

Is Fox or CBS going to be willing to risk upsetting the NFL by hiring Simmons? Does the NFL really even care?

Dan Patrick made it seem like the NFL pushed this through ESPN. Then again, Patrick is always critical of "the mother ship". I think Simmons should have his own show and website.

So based on the Ewing Theory, Grantland and ESPN are going to be effing amazing now.

Looks like he has landed at HBO, where he will host a show, do podcasts, and produce 30 for 30ish content starting in October.

For me it's the podcasts. That was my favorite part of the daily commute, so I've really missed it.
