2 Memphis 33 - 12
5 Houston 32 - 14
6 San Antonio 30 - 17
7 Dallas 30 - 17
New Orleans 24 - 22

Last place New Orleans is only 2 games out of the playoffs and would be 6th in the East.

Four teams are above .600.

Every team has at least 4 division losses; Spurs and Mavs have 6.

Southwest has 88 conference wins, Pacific has 72, Northwest has 48.

Not counting division losses, Southwest has 29 losses, Pacific has 47, Northwest has 63.

And there is a legitimate chance the division finishes with 3 teams in the top 4 spots.

The Southwest Division is definitely the SEC West of the SEC (Western Conference)

Do they still do the thing where division winners are automatically 1-2-3 regardless of record?

I believe so, that's a good point. Ignoring playoff seedings though, I think Memphis, SA, and Houston/Dallas could all finish with top 4 records in the west. Depends more on what the Blazers and Clippers do though.

I think division winners are guaranteed a top 4 spot.

I think this is correct, but if I'm not mistaken, there can be times where the 5 seed will have home court advantage over the 4 if the 5 has the better record. I wanna say one year we were the 5 against the 4 seeded Jazz, but we had homecourt over them because we had a better record

3 division winners and the next best record make up the top 4 teams. from those 4 teams, seeds 1-4 are based on the best records, using tiebreakers as necessary.

for instance, if the top 2 teams in the conference are both from the same divison, they would be 1-2 so as not to have to play each other in the second round. the other two home court spots would be the other division winners.

seeds 5-8 are based purely on records, using tiebreakers as necessary.

as it stands now, it would be

1) Golden State
2) Memphis
3) Portland
4) LA
5) Houston
6) San Antonio
7) Dallas
8) Phoenix

3-5 Portland is going to get a top 4 seed almost no matter what because they are running away with the weak Northwest.

Playoff Tiebreaker:

Overall Record
-Division winner vs Non Division winner
-Head to Head
-Division record
-Conference record

Should that not be enough, tiebreaker is based on W-L vs. playoff teams in your conference, W-L vs playoff teams against the other conference, and then, finally Net Points for the season.

the 2004 midwest division was the best division of all time

It's a little tougher to do a head to head comparison because in 2004 there were only two seven-team divisions in the WC. 2004 has a higher percentage of its teams in the playoffs (85% to 80%), but both divisions have all but one team in, 2015's last place team is slightly stronger than 2004's, and their average seeding is the same.

I'm going with 2015 since the division has a better winning percentage ( .645 to .604) and more to the point, a better winning percentage against the rest of the NBA ( .685 to .648) . Both numbers are required only because 2015 has played a different percentage of divisional games since it's still midseason.

Another little number is that 2015's top team has a better win percent vs the rest of the NBA than 2004's top team does. That holds true for the top four spots, so it seems fairly safe to say that 2015 is stronger at the top in addition to being stronger overall.

I hope for the Rockets sake the southwest division doesn't choke in the postseason like the SEC West

The Southwest could put up a very salty All Star team that could hold their own against the league.

Starters (as determined by current All-Star team)
Frontcourt: Davis, Gasol, Duncan
Backcourt: Harden, Parker or Conley

Front court (4): DIrk, Randolph, Howard, Kawhi or Tyson Chandler
Backcourt (3): (Parker or Conley), Ellis, and Tyreke (?)

If Anthony Davis wins DPOY this year, that would mean all the teams but the Spurs have a DPOY winner on their roster, and the Spurs have a guy that has the record for the most All Defensive teams.

The Spurs might not have a DPoY winner, but they have two of the three best defenders in the conference and one who is top 10 of all time. Such a travesty that Duncan never got DPoY.

And the Pelicans just took Atlanta behind the woodshed, 115-100. Streak over. Yeah I would say this division is the best in sports and maybe in history.

Our last place team in the division beat the best team in the East handily.

Just nuts.

And check out how close the division records are (and look who is at the top).

Division (only) records

Pelicans 6-4
Memphis 6-5
Houston 5-5
Dallas 5-6
Spurs 4-6

I don't know if anyone would be shocked if everyone ended up between 9-7 and 7-9.

The way this playoff race is shaping up, the Southwest will have one half of the playoff bracket.

Currently:
2 v 7: Memphis v Dallas
3 v 6: Houston v SA

Even if Mem & Hou switch or Dallas or SA, it wouldn't change. Given 1, 4, and 8 are unlikely to change in their seed, SA passing the Clippers changes that.

And the Pelicans could sneak it too. They are an OKC loss away from the 8th spot.

Not to mention Davis has been hurt for NO. If he hadn't missed some time they might even be at the 8th spot right now.

Pelicans move into the 8th spot. The whole division is in the playoffs now. 5 of 8 spots belong to the southwest.

For lack of better place to put this, here a Grizz blogger tracks playoff positioning, and I know it has a couple of errors (Grizz home record for example). What I like best about it is you can see what other teams have B2B games remaining, and when.

I believe Portland has the most remaining B2B with 5.

Wow. What are the combined records of the southwest teams against everyone else? Take out the games beating up on each other and I bet it's ridiculous.

K, did a little math. Here's the records with the division games taken out:

Memphis 42-17
Houston 43-17
San Antonio 41-19
Dallas 38-20
New Orleans 31-28

Combined: 195-101 (.659)

That record against the rest of the league is insane. I'm too lazy to do the rest of the divisions but I doubt anyone is even close.
