Like in pro wrestling, it was probably informally established that neither team would lose, so that neither team would lose face. It was a double count out, and the title didn't change hands.

In this case the Globetrotters would save face by not losing to a PE team, and the N.Koreans would literally save face by not having their heads chopped off by a crazy dictator.

North Korea is tough to beat in their official Black Out game. A student group sells those jackets to fans for five bucks.
