Rockets Fail happened well before that.

During the '84 draft, Portland offered their pick and Drexler for Sampson. Houston refused. Had they taken that deal, they could have had Drexler, Olajuwon, and Jordan (they would have skipped Bowie since they had a center).

um, yes they are.
Hou took Hakeem with #1 pick. Portland had #2 & took Sam Bowie. Chi took Jordan with #3 pick.
With the trade, Hou would've had #1 & #2 picks - would've been Hakeem & Jordan.

Houston thought Bryce Drew was the 16th best player in the draft?? Was that completely a result of his buzzer beater?

That's almost as bad as most of the Mavs' drafts.

Worst part is that they told him if he was still there, they'd take him. I'm still mad about that one.

I seriously doubt that this trio would have stayed together. Plus, do the Rockets get to the '86 finals without Sampson? I'll take either Jordan or Drexler over Sampson any day, but I'm just not sure this scenario would have worked out.

Well, to be fair, the Dickerson pick was a good one. He was an integral part of the trade for Steve Francis, and he showed some real potential before his career took a terrible turn.

Absolutely no excuse for Bryce Drew or Turkan. Those were terrible picks.

That said, that was a pretty awful draft where the Rox were picking.
