Unreal. Deserves it's own thread.

Dirk is a Beast!

Not to mention his 6 boards, 4 dishes, and 4 blocks. Plus, a lot of his impact doesn't show up on the stat line, because the Mavs are very good at making the extra pass after Dirk passes out of the double team, and because a lot of Barrea's ability to get in the lane is because of Dirk's presence.

When was the last time a guy scored that many in a playoff game without attempting a three? Howard scored 46 against ATL and actually took a three in that game (he missed).

i honestly doubt that has ever happened before.

maybe some stat geek will look it up

Not to be snarky, but I'm sure it's happened. The NBA didn't have a three point line for fifty years. Chamberlain, Russell, Baylor etc.

Moses Malone is guy that might have done it. Maybe even Olajuwon or Robinson.

I have the feeling that he was unstoppable no matter what they did to adjust in the 2nd half. He could have had 15 assists if they consistently double/triple teamed. With the way the refs were calling the game, he played it perfectly. If they weren't calling fouls he would have turned it on like Game 3 vs LA.

not to be snarky, but I wasn't referring to anything about 3-pointers

I would think no one has scored that many points on that few field goal attempts without a 3 point attempt.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
per basketball-reference no one has done 48 on 15 since 1991

RT @ZachLowe_SI: 44 points on 14 shot attempts is better than you'd do if you just went 14-of-14 from three. #DIRKMATH

Shaq has scored at least 40 in a playoff game 12 times so I'm sure he's done 48 without a three attempt. This was Dirk's 6th 40+ point playoff game.

1991 is the farthest back basketball-reference goes for playoffs games.

Yes. He scored 50 on 19-29 shooting with nine triples. RT @BigBlueAL1980: @kpelton You mean Vince vs Phi right??

Dirk finishes with .939 TS%. Previous playoff high, min. 45 points, in @bball_ref era was .825 by V. Carter (5/11/01 vs. TOR).

They were saying on TV it had never been done before. Interesting

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yep, the closest result was 41 points on 14 attempts
Terry Porter Portland vs. Utah in May of 1992.

Dirk's 48 on 15 is best of 1991 to present (available data)

Fairly useless stat, but interesting nonetheless.

Dirk will now have TWO games on this list. Notice his game in 2003....he did it with 3-pointers rather than free throws

InternetFan02

That 2003 Dirk game was a Game 7 vs Portland.

How about that Shaq boxscore - 18 for 39 free throws in 2000. Really an exciting time for the league when your marquee player can't shoot free throws and that's the best way to slow him down.

from Elias/Daily Dime
quote:
In addition, he made 12 of 15 field-goal attempts. His total of 48 points was the highest in any playoff game in NBA history by a player who shot at least 80 percent from the floor. No other player had ever scored that many points in a postseason game while attempting fewer than 22 shots from the field. The previous fewest field-goal attempts was 22 by Bob Cousy on March 21, 1953 (50 points on 10/22 FG, 30/32 FT) -- and he needed four overtimes to reach those levels.

wouldn't it be 48 points on 39 shots? I mean I know Free throws don't count against FG%, but he scored what 24 points from the line. If you're not including Foul Shots would you then not include points from foul shots making it 24 points on 15 shots?

NOTE: I don't care how you consider it the man was on fire regardless.

That's not the way they count shots. Maybe if you count the shots that he took and was fouled on... but you don't count free throw attempts as shots.

Oh I know how they do it, but to say that he had 48 points on 15 shots isn't realistic. It's how they gauge it, but it makes no sense. He didn't make 48 points on 15 shots...that's 3.2 points per shot. wasn't he only shooting 3's and getting fouled every time?

NOTE: I'm not arguing against Dirk's massive, beasty performance, just they way they gauge points per shots.

Last night must have been one of the most painful three hours of Guitarsoup's life. He hates Dirk more than anybody currently walking this earth. If you took away every post he has ever made trying to discredit Dirk and his success, his post count would drop by a good 10%
