Article indicates that UEFA is part of the discussion and not merely something that was presented to them.

I think UEFA smells an opportunity with FIFA in disarray to strengthen their confederation. It won't be teams like England playing teams like Haiti. The proposal would be for the top league to be compromised of the top European nations, US, Canada, and Mexico. Can almost guarantee that those games would be based on US East Cost and Toronto (maybe West Coast but that nearly doubles the travel time from Europe). Yeah, the medium and smaller European teams are likely to travel to the medium and smaller CONCACAF teams (and vice versa), but I'm sure that UEFA/CONCACAF will adopt the FIFA model and just give them a large enough chunk of the commercials to keep them quiet.

Basically, the financial gain for the big European nations to play meaningful games on a regularly basis in the US is going to be what drives this.

The only question would be if the uproar from European fans (let's face it, US/Canada/Mexico fans would LOVE this) would be loud enough to dissuade UEFA from doing this. But I'm not sure that enough European fans care about the Nations League to put up much of a fuss.

Haiti qualified outright for the World Cup. Yes USA, Canada, and Mexico weren't in WCQ this time around, but if England can travel to Slovenia, they can travel to Haiti/Mexico for one window. And I think it'd be fun to see the level of shenanigans that happen

But seriously, this would be a scheduling nightmare unless FIFA consolidates international windows (which I think they should for a variety of reasons).

It would take place in already sanctioned international windows. From a scheduling perspective, nothing changes. From a travel perspective, the only ones impacted would be European national team players who now have to travel across the Atlantic. Is that a consideration? For sure, but North American national team players that play for European clubs have been doing it for years. It's not unmanageable. Especially if they go full FIFA and put all the games in USA/Canada/Mexico (thereby limiting the travel time).

Biggest hurdle might be stadium availability. No idea how they could secure the big stadiums they would want to play in considering half the stadiums they would want to use would be occupied every Sunday. Even if they worked around the NFL schedule, the pitches would likely be atrocious for soccer (though would be hilariously ironic to see residue soccer lines at a NFL stadium on a Sunday in October).

Anyway, call me a cynic but the only major consideration for this will be how much money they project to make from the endeavor and who gets what part of it. Sporting and/or competitive considerations are going to be a distant second in the calculus for how they plan this and sell it to their confederation members.

By scheduling I mean the stuff you're talking about - changing the format of the competition to accommodate travel.

There's simply no reasonable way they can do cross-Atlantic home and homes in one window. And I'm probably naive, but I gotta think fans are gonna have enough outcry to prevent the loss of too many games to neutral sites in the US… because it's gonna be big countries that lose home games because they're the ones that'll draw crowds in the US.

Only way that might work (but then has competitive consequences) is if they make a CONCACAF group for that phase… so in the fall UEFA doesn't travel to the US. Then knockouts get held in the US.

They could potentially also then expand based on this because theoretically they wouldn't need to do two-leg knockouts anymore if everyone is at a neutral site. Maybe have the US play in Canada in knockouts to be neutral.

I hope it happens but I suspect European fans are gonna lose their minds and get this killed.
