Texas Aggie soccer was gifted a home match to kick off the NCAA Tournament this year. The Aggies will host the Colorado Buffaloes in the first round of the tournament on Friday. The match kicks off at 7PM and will air on ESPN+ for subscribers. You can also follow the action live on the radio by using the 12th Man app or by tuning into Radio Aggieland at 97.3FM.
Colorado returns to the NCAA tournament after a two year drought. Firmly a bubble team, they received the at-large bid after compiling a 13-4-3 season record, including a 5-3-3 mark in conference play. Their best wins include a 2-0 victory over #20 Michigan State and a 4-0 pummeling of a formidable Arizona State team.
Overall, Colorado outscored their opponents 37-17. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Nytes has allowed those 17 goals while totalling 70 saves on the season. Colorado has a total of 8 shutouts on the year.
Senior forward Shyra James (#20) has dominated the offensive statistical column for Colorado. She has 15 goals on the year along with 2 assists. She has 90 shots on the season, which is nearly 1/3 of the team's total. She's placing 44% of her shots on frame.
Freshman defender, Faith Leyba (#4) was named to the Pac-12 All Conference team for her play on the back line. Faith's twin sister, Hope, plays forward for the Buffs as well. Faith has also contributed 3 goals this season.
Some will remember that we had a pretty decent rivalry with Colorado during the Big 12 days, but A&M dominated the series with a 17-2-2 record against the Buffs. Our last match against CU came in the Big 12 Tournament in 2010. The Aggies advanced on PKs in that one after playing to a scoreless tie.
A&M has been gifted a first round home game against another solid bubble team. There is plenty of opportunity to prove that they deserve it. This is a winnable game and a win would potentially setup a rematch with #1 seed Florida State, who the Aggies took to the wire in the season opener.
