Should Penalty Kicks Be Counted in Goal Total?

Ronaldo, Messi,Mbappe et al take the penalties for their teams and are 80% plus effective.

Is that fair to the other goal scorers who have to shoot from the field against defenders?

Granted the PK kickers are usually the best and would end up at the top of goal scorers

but the rest have to fight it out amongst themselves for the remaining places.

Should the rules be changed?

I don't really care but we count free throws in point totals.

But with the exception of technicals, if you are taking free throws, it's because you drew the foul which is a skill. In soccer, I could get hacked down in the box and then you could take the pk.

Not really arguing either way, just pointing out that it's a little bit apples and oranges.

I think non-penalty goals should be used for awards such as golden ball or boot.

But penalties scored can be added to a player's season/career record no problem.

This will never happen, but it would be compelling if penalties only counted for 0.9 goals.

Would keep penalties valuable, but would incentivize open field goal and create a lot of dramatic finishes and fewer ties.

I believe it is wrong to allow a designated kicker for PKs, just like I believe the DH is wrong. You get fouled, you kick, unless you're injured, in which case you have to leave the game.

DH is wrong because people take turns at bat. But they don't take turns at PKs. Apples and elephants.

Maybe a poor analogy, I just intended the point to be that having someone else step in for you shouldn't be allowed in athletics.

And I also believe they should ban the stutter step motions in PKs.

1. I can see the person fouled argument for contact fouls but what about hand balls? Last attacker to touch the ball (I have seen that be the keeper )?
2. They banned stutter step at but allow it now. I do agree this is something that likely should be banned.

I think making the kicker take the PK may make defenders target them. If you are going to get a red card anyway, then make it hurt so he might screw up the PK.

I'm okay with the stutter step, as long as they don't go backwards. That would be a "balk" of sorts. But slowing, and even pausing should be okay, IMO.

What I hate more is the new offside rules they are tossing around. That single atoms of the defender and forward can overlap and make it onsides.

That's going to make it way too easy to score.

There have been a couple of variations but with the pre-VAR even is onsides rule there had to be clear separation at the torso to be offsides. This is going back to that kind of rule I suspect. Right now it is the opposite a single atom of you toe is offsides and you are offside.

New offside will help the game. I hated it when we went to freeze frame and the defender was going back and the attacker forward and they're even but the head of the attacker was closer.

pk goes in the back of the net just like any other goal. Count it the same.

My biggest gripe of penalty kicks being counted was when included for awards like golden boot in a tournament.

I saw this diagram on one of the soccer subreddits:

This would be preposterous. It would make average strikers have Messi-like goal stats. Every record book would have to have huge "new offside rule" asterisk.

Often the guy who earns the PK deserves the stat, not the guy who shoots it.

And my biggest gripe was the goal total by a certain Megan Rapinoe. Other players were the ones being fouled and easily have just as good of a shot. Im not trying to make a statement about a specific player, but in this case there are and we're others contributing more significantly. (Reference: Olympics)

I always thought instead of banning the stutter step, just let the goalie come off his line once the shooter makes forward movement.

That would make them too hard. Then you'd see all sorts of handballs and other fouls in the box.. specially at the end of games (when losing a man doesn't matter much).

It's actually shocking how bad some players are at PKs.

US v Canada is an example.
