It is time for the greatest Aggie tradition of all: The annual Fish Camp Game at Ellis Field!
Texas A&M faces off against New Mexico State University on Saturday at 7PM at Ellis Field. This is a rare Saturday game, but it will actually mark the second year in a row that the Fish Camp match falls on a Saturday.
This will be the first time A&M plays the Aggies of New Mexico State and, in fact, the first time Texas A&M faces any other team called the Aggies (outside of the Maroon & White game of course).
New Mexico State is familiar with Aggie on Aggie aggression as they tangled with the UC Davis Aggies last season on their way to a 9-11 regular season record. They went 5-5 in conference play (WAC) last year.
New Mexico State is 0-1-1 so far this season. They opened play in Eugene with a 0-2 loss at Oregon. They followed that up with a 2-2 tie at Cal State Fullerton. It's been a pretty decent schedule out of the gate for NM State.
NM State has only fielded an NCAA soccer team since 2009, so they don't have a tremendous amount of history. And they've never made an NCAA tournament and have an all-time record of 77-159-21, so they don't have much success to speak of either.
The largest home crowd New Mexico State has played in front of in Las Cruces was 2,005. Saturday's crowd will at least double that.
Despite my negative tone, New Mexico State should be better than either team A&M has faced at home this season. But A&M is still very clearly on a different level than New Mexico State. Texas A&M should expect to win this game by a few goals.
I'm hoping that, once again, we have a lot of players get minutes Saturday night and we continue to see good development on set pieces and that cohesion we saw in the last match. But mostly, I hope the team continues to have fun and thrills some of the new freshman fans, giving them a reason to come back. These are the games where new Aggie Soccer fans are born.
